India's Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi impressive run at the Mumbai Open 2025 tennis tournament ended in the semi-finals after losing to fifth seed Jil Teichmann of Switzerland at the Cricket Club of India on Saturday.

The 15-year-old - a top 60 junior - from Tamil Nadu who trains at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy in Mallorca bowed out in the last four of her fifth professional tournament after losing 6-3, 6-1 to Teichmann, who is 117th in the world tennis rankings.

Maaya Rajeshwaran failed to hold serve in her first two games, allowing Jil Teichmann to race to a 4-0 lead.

The Indian teenager earned back a break in the fifth game to make it 4-1 and then had two break points to close the gap further in the seventh game. However, Teichmann managed to hold on to her serve and won the opening set.

The second set followed a similar pattern with the teenager losing her serve in her first two games and then again in the seventh as Teichmann won the match and progressed to the final.

"She is very young, has a lot of power," Teichmann observed. "She will have a great future. She has to keep working on her game -- few things here and there, but very good talent!"

Despite the defeat, Maaya Rajeshwaran’s run to the semi-finals in the WTA 125 tournament has ensured that she will earn a WTA ranking in the coming weeks, making her the youngest Indian to achieve this milestone.

Furthermore, she is also the first tennis player born on or after 2009 who made it to the top four of a WTA 125 tournament globally.

Earlier in the week after receiving a wildcard entry into the tournament, Rajeshwaran Revathi had beaten world No. 264 Nicole Fossa Huergo of Italy 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 in the qualifiers before overcoming the United States of America’s Jessica Failla, 434th in the world rankings, 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 to make the main draw.

Maaya beat world No. 225 Iryna Shymanovich 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16 and then got past Zarina Diyas - 353rd in the WTA rankings and a former top 50 player - after the Kazakh withdrew midway through the second set. The Indian tennis player was leading 6-3, 3-2 at the time.

In the quarter-finals, Rajeshwaran beat world No. 285 Mei Yamaguchi of Japan 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to make the semis of the Mumbai Open.

The Mumbai Open is the biggest professional women's tennis tournament in India and it returned after a gap of six years in 2024. Mumbai Open 2025 is the fourth edition of the tournament.

The 2024 Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka had won the 2017 edition of the Mumbai Open as a teenager.
