Nigerians react as FIFA decides on Nigeria's 2026 World Cup fate today

Nigerians are anxiously awaiting a crucial ruling from FIFA on Monday, February 16, as Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup hang in the balance.

The decision concerns Nigeria’s eligibility protest against the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) following their African play-off final clash last November.

Millions of Nigerians remain hopeful that the Super Eagles could still secure a playoff berth, depending on FIFA’s verdict.

The petition was filed in December by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), which alleges that at least six DR Congo players who featured in the play-off final were ineligible due to recent nationality switches.

NFF General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi expressed confidence in the case, stating, “We believe we have a strong case, and we’re waiting for FIFA’s decision on our complaints.”

A favourable ruling could dramatically reshape Nigeria’s qualification prospects, potentially reinstating the Super Eagles into the intercontinental play-offs and reopening a pathway to the 2026 tournament.

However, DR Congo’s football authorities have rejected the allegations, maintaining that FIFA’s eligibility regulations permit the players to represent the country. They have accused Nigeria of attempting to overturn a result decided on the pitch.

Fans React Online

Across Nigeria, fans have reacted with a mix of anxiety and optimism. The hashtag #SuperEagles has been trending on social media, with supporters alternating between hopeful prayers and sharp criticism of the qualification campaign.

One X user, Vibes (@Vibes_with_Rey), wrote, “God, please remove DR Congo from the World Cup play-off and replace them with Nigeria.”

Another supporter, POLAN (@POLANKLASIQ), argued, “There’s no reason FIFA should give Congo the spot today. Nigeria’s global presence alone makes it a more convincing competitor for the World Cup.”

What Happens Next?

If FIFA upholds the petition, Nigeria could be reinstated into the six-team intercontinental play-off tournament, where they would face the winner of Jamaica vs. New Caledonia for a final ticket to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

If the protest is dismissed, DR Congo are expected to defend their qualification, having previously described Nigeria’s complaint as the actions of “bad losers.” Legal observers suggest the dispute could yet proceed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), depending on FIFA’s ruling.
