Paula Badosa was left absolutely furious when her first-round match against Australia's Daria Kasatkina was postponed for the night at the US Open just two points away from victory. The US Open was hit by rain for the third-straight day, causing chaos on the outside courts that don't have roofs.

Alex de Minaur's match against Italian qualifier Andrea Guerrieri didn't even start and was rescheduled to Thursday morning (Australian time). Kasatkina was trailing Badosa 1-6 4-5 when play was called off for the night after a number of earlier stoppages.

Badosa had the match on her racquet and was serving at 40-40 when play was halted for the final time around 10.30pm in New York. The Spaniard was just two points away from victory, but will have to wait overnight to try and seal the win.

Kasatkina had already saved three match points and would be delighted to get a reprieve. Badosa was furious at the timing of the postponement and angrily gesticulated towards her entourage. It wasn't clear whether she was unhappy with the call to stop play or the situation with the rain in general.

She appeared to suggest it wasn't raining heavily enough to stop play so close to possibly ending the match. Leading tennis writer Jose Morgado wrote on social media platform X: "Incredible scenes. Play suspended with Badosa serving for the match at 6-1 5-4. Had three match points already. Terrible situation."

Another person wrote: "What a disaster what happened to Badosa. They suspend her match when she was two points away from winning it." While a third added: "Who thought it would be a good idea to suspend the match with Badosa? How is that fair? So dumb."

It was another great day for the Aussie tennis contingent with Dane Sweeny and Tristan Schoolkate advancing to the second round. Sweeney advanced when Corentin Moutet retired in the third set, while Schoolkate beat American player Nishesh Basavareddy.
