Tuchel regrets not tasting Azteca turf after Mexico win

In Mexico, England head coach Thomas Tuchel said after a 3-2 victory over the hosts in the World Cup round of 16 at the Azteca Stadium that he regrets not tasting the grass from the pitch. He said this in an interview with Daniel Sturridge for an upcoming Football Association of England feature, MyJoyOnline reports, citing the BBC.

Emotions after the match

According to the German coach, after the game he wrote to a friend that he would like to keep part of that moment within himself forever. Tuchel called the match at the Azteca one of the brightest episodes of the England team's campaign.

England played with 10 men for most of the second half after Jarell Quansah was sent off, but held on to their winning score. For Mexico, this defeat was only their third at the stadium in 90 official matches.

Henderson's injury

Tuchel also noted the team's unity after Jordan Henderson's injury. During the victory celebrations at the Azteca, the footballer fell over an advertising board and broke his arm, forcing him to leave the tournament early.

The coach said that the players immediately stopped celebrating, surrounded Henderson and protected him from the crowd. After the match against Mexico, England reached the semi-finals, where they lost to Argentina, and later defeated France in the third-place match. England will play their next game on September 26 against reigning world champions Spain in the opening match of the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League season.
