Real Madrid-bound winger rejected PSG swap move; only wanted Bernabeu switch - Romano

Real Madrid have been in negotiations with RB Leipzig to try to sign talented teenage winger Yan Diomande.

Los Blancos are ready to agree to a package of close to €130 million to bring Diomande to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spanish club intensified talks with the Bundesliga club yesterday in a bid to try to bring him to Jose Mourinho’s training camp as soon as possible, and a breakthrough has been achieved, with the transfer expected to be completed this week.

For much of the summer, Ligue 1 giants PSG were front-runners to sign Diomande, but Real Madrid leapfrogged them to get ahead in the race.

PSG explored swap deal with Leipzig

Now, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that PSG and RB Leipzig had held discussions over a potential swap deal involving Diomande and Ibrahim Mbaye.

The proposal would have seen the two highly rated prospects move in opposite directions, potentially giving Leipzig an immediate replacement while allowing PSG to land one of Europe’s brightest young talents.

However, the deal fell through.

Diomande wanted only Real Madrid

Romano suggested that the negotiations ultimately collapsed because Diomande had already made up his mind about his next destination.

This understandably left PSG disappointed, with the French club even coming out with a public statement saying the figures of the deal did not make sense.

It was a classic case of sour grapes for the French club, who even hit out at Real Madrid in that statement for the way they do business.

There is no love lost between PSG and Real Madrid, and this Diomande saga certainly did not help ease relations.

Real Madrid get their man

After weeks of negotiations, Real Madrid have finally achieved a breakthrough in their negotiations with RB Leipzig.

The player’s commitment very clearly seems to be to wear the club’s white this upcoming season and, more often than not, that helps force a move.

It now seems only a matter of time before the transfer is announced.

The €130 million+ price tag will mean that Diomande will join Real Madrid this summer with massive pressure on him, but the club should be careful not to let it affect him.

Los Blancos will be signing one of the most talented wingers in football at the moment and, if they handle him carefully, he could be the next superstar to enthral the Bernabeu crowd for the next decade.

Real Madrid have had an unprecedented transfer window so far, bringing in the likes of Denzel Dumfries, Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate and Carlos Espi.

Los Blancos are also working to sign the talented Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig and Rodri from Manchester City.

However, this transfer window has been remarkable not just for the signings Los Blancos have made but also for the sales they have managed.

Now, according to AS, this summer has already become the most profitable in Real Madrid’s history for player sales.

Academy continues to pay dividends

The departures of Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios to Fulham have taken Los Blancos’ total income from outgoing transfers to a remarkable €189 million, surpassing the club’s previous record and underlining the enormous value of La Fabrica.

Every euro of the €189 million generated this summer has come from players developed by Real Madrid or those with strong academy ties.

The biggest sale remains Nico Paz’s €60 million move to Como, while Gonzalo Garcia’s €40 million transfer to Fulham is now the second-largest departure of the window.

Victor Munoz (€20.5 million), Mario Gila (€15 million), Alvaro Rodriguez (€12.5 million), Alex Jimenez (€12.5 million), Cesar Palacios (€10 million) and several other academy graduates have also contributed to the record-breaking figure.

More money still to come

The €189 million figure may not be the final total.

Real Madrid are still working on several outgoing deals, including Fulham’s interest in Thiago Pitarch, Strasbourg’s pursuit of Jacobo Ortega and a potential transfer involving Sergio Arribas, from which the club would receive 50 percent of the transfer fee thanks to a sell-on agreement.

Should those deals materialise, the club are expected to comfortably surpass the €200 million mark before the transfer window closes.

Academy financing Mourinho’s new project

The timing of those sales is significant, as it has allowed Jose Mourinho to make the signings he needs to build his new project.

Rather than placing massive pressure on the board to fund signings, La Fabrica sales have directly helped the club reinforce the first team.

Real Madrid have always used this model successfully, but this summer transfer window is the pinnacle of that philosophy.

If Los Blancos go on to have a memorable 2026-27 season, these sales would have to be remembered as one of the main launchpads on which the project was built.

It remains to be seen how much the Merengues are able to increase that figure between now and the end of the summer transfer window.
