‘From what I’ve seen…’ – Steven Smith shares what he’s noticed about Rangers squad since Russell Martin was sacked

Steven Smith takes charge of Rangers as interim head coach on Saturday evening.

Rangers play Dundee United on Saturday in the Scottish Premiership, but will still be without a manager.

Kevin Muscat is to be announced as Rangers manager in the coming days, as final touches are being prepared for the former Gers player to take the reins at Ibrox.

It’s been a long process for the Bears, but a worthy one, as Muscat has been hailed as a manager while speculation surrounding his name mounted for the Rangers job.

Rangers had a catastrophic start to the season under Russell Martin, but Smith‘s comments before the clash against Dundee suggest Muscat may walk into managing a winning Rangers side.

Steven Smith to “strip back” tactics to seek Rangers results

Martin was often criticised for his tactical approach to managing Rangers, as his side tried to play possession-based football but with little to no success in winning games of football.

Smith spoke to the media before the showdown on Saturday, and explained his simple philosophy to get Rangers back winning again.

“Just to strip it back and simplify it, and remind them that they are a good group. They are a good group from what I’ve seen, but words are cheap, it’s up to them now to go and put that into practice tomorrow,” as reported by The Rangers Review.

Smith added, “Even with the tactical stuff, I don’t want to overload them with information, I want to simplify it and keep it as simple as I can, and then the change in results will come.”

Smith’s comments have highlighted exactly what Rangers need before Muscat‘s arrival, as success cannot be ruled out this season.

Kevin Muscat could yet see silverware success with Rangers this season

Muscat is a serial-winner, and has won trophies at almost every club he’s been at.

Rangers are eighth in the league but still have time to turn things around, as they still have winnable games in the Europa League.

Kevin Muscat’s trophy cabinet as a manager:

Rangers still have the Sports Premier Cup Semi-final against Celtic to look forward to, as Muscat could manage in a final shortly after he arrives at Ibrox.
