Manchester United fans are having to face the sobering reality that their club is not currently one of the most lucrative prospects for new recruits looking for a transfer.

Following Ineos' arrival, the Reds have stripped back their wages - letting high earners go - but at the moment they have not seen this pay dividends on their Premier League position. United are currently languishing in the bottom half of the table and there is currently a very real prospect that Ruben Amorim's side will not have European football next season.

Now UEFA have expanded the Champions League, more teams will be able to offer top players more lucrative wages and a better stage for them to showcase their abilities. So without that to offer, how will United be able to lure the likes of Viktor Gyokeres in the summer transfer window when some clubs will potentially be able to give him a better package.

Well thankfully for United, their name can still offer plenty of weight. Speaking with Rio Ferdinand, Leny Yoro explained how the appeal for playing for the Reds made sure he overlooked interest from elsewhere.

"When I was a kid, everyone was watching Manchester United," he exclaimed. "It's a dream to be here."

While everyone can agree that United are not the force they once were on the pitch, there is a generation of footballers coming through at the moment who still see the Reds as a strong destination thanks to watching them growing up. This could be enough, coupled with the prospect of working with Amorim again, to bring Gyokeres to Old Trafford.

However, this is not a long term strategy that United can dine out on forever if things do not improve on the pitch. The likes of Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Leeds United were once dominant and then had to rough it in the lower reaches when results just did not improve.

The good news is that clubs can rebuild and United have not fallen so far from grace yet that they can't still attract big names. But this slump has lasted more than a decade now and soon the club has to start winning again to continue in that top tier bracket.
