Darwin Nunez's face sums up Liverpool torment after missed penalty against PSG

Liverpool has been dumped out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain after losing to Luis Enrique's side on penalties.

After somehow coming away from the first leg in the French capital with a 1-0 lead on aggregate following Harvey Elliott's late winner and Alisson's heroics in net, Liverpool found themselves 1-0 down in the return leg after just 12 minutes at Anfield.

PSG forward Ousmane Dembele managed to bundle the ball home past Alisson in the Liverpool net following a mix-up at the back to give Luis Enrique's side the lead. However, despite the first-half goal, PSG were unable to find a winner, while Liverpool failed to create any real opportunities to take control of the tie.

In the end, it came down to a penalty shootout, with Mohamed Salah and Vitinha both scoring for their respective sides with the opening two spot kicks. However, while Gonçalo Ramos dispatched his penalty, Darwin Nunez had his saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Uruguayan forward looked inconsolable walking back to his teammates who tried to comfort the Liverpool striker following his miss. Dembele then stepped up to fire home his penalty, before Donnarumma again saved a spot kick, this time from Curtis Jones.

And after Jones' miss, Desire Doue scored from the spot to dump Liverpool out of the Champions League. The Reds had topped the Champions League's new league phase table after winning seven of their eight games prior to the knockout stages.

However, they will now have to pick themselves up for the Carabao Cup final on Sunday at Wembley against Newcastle United - a game they will potentially have to play without star right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Speaking after the game, Arne Slot confirmed Alexander-Arnold, who went off in the second half after landing awkwardly on the sidelined, could miss the final. He also added Ibrahima Konate, who went off in extra time, was substituted due to being tired.

"Konate was just tired but with Trent I’d be surprised if he played on Sunday," said Slot following the defeat to PSG.

Despite being dumped out of Europe's elite competition, Liverpool has the opportunity to retain the Carabao Cup on Sunday when they take on Newcastle, something which is not lost on Reds skipper Virgil van Dijk.

"It was a very intense great game of football, I think to be part of it as well," said Van Dijk. "It was totally there for Liverpool and what we showed in Paris and unfortunately were out on penalties and that is the reality.

"I think in the first half we created dangerous moments and they have the quality as well, and then it comes down to penalties.

"It's part of football, I said to the guys, obviously, you can be disappointed because we're out of the competition, but chin up and get ready for the next challenge, a beautiful one on the weekend."

Liverpool.com says: "Liverpool rode their luck in the first leg, and were lucky to come away with a win against PSG in Paris. However, they were caught out early on against Luis Enrique's side, and failed to really create anything against the French side.

"Spare a thought for Darwin Nunez too. The Uruguayan striker looked devastated after his penalty was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma. Ultimately however, that could be the last time Nunez kicks a ball in the Champions League for the Reds, who may look to move on from him in the summer."
