Arne Slot and Richard Hughes oversaw a quiet first transfer window at Liverpool with Federico Chiesa the only senior incoming signing. The Italian arrived from Juventus at the end of August in a deal worth up to £12m.

The Reds would also agree a £25m switch with Valencia for goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, though the Georgia international won’t actually complete the transfer and move to Anfield until next summer. Meanwhile, they were also rejected by Martin Zubimendi after they tried to lure the Spain international away from Real Sociedad.

In the summer, there was admittedly frustration in the Liverpool fanbase at the Reds’ limited incoming business. Yet both new head coach Slot and new sporting director Hughes would stand by the strength of the squad they had inherited from Jurgen Klopp.

Three months on, having seen Liverpool win 15 of their 17 matches so far this season to top both the Premier League and Champions League tables - and also reach the League Cup quarter-finals - such faith in the Reds’ ranks has certainly been well justified.

Given the improvement in the likes of Ryan Gravenberch - shining at number six after the collapsed deal for Zubimendi - Ibrahima Konate and Luis Diaz under Slot, Liverpool’s squad certainly looks strong and has managed to cope well with a number of injuries.

But with the January transfer window now on the horizon, there are sure to be some supporters who will be longing to see the Reds recruit mid-season. Historically, Liverpool tend to be quiet in the winter window and it would perhaps be a surprise if January 2025 proved to be any different.

But Reds legend Jamie Carragher has urged his former club to make at least one signing when the window re-opens and resurrect a deal for Zubimenidi - despite the form of Gravenberch - to really strengthen their Premier League title chances at the likes of Manchester City’s expense.

“If I was Liverpool I would be doing that (strengthening in January),” said Carragher on The Overlap’s Stick to Football, brought to you by Sky Bet. “I was thinking about this - if you are Arne Slot and let’s say an average Premier League manager is at a top club for two or three years trying to win the league.

“Arteta has been there for four or five years. You are trying to build something. He might never be in this position again in terms of being nine points clear of Arsenal and five clear of City.

“There’s a long way to go, I get that, but we know Liverpool don’t do silly things in the transfer market but if there is something there right now. Do it.

“Zubimendi is the player he wanted, they ended up putting Gravenberch there who has been fantastic, but if he is the player you want - go and do it - you might never be in this position.

“You might be here three years but City are City and they are five points ahead of you at Christmas. Just make it count.”

Liverpool agreed to pay Zubimendi's £51m release clause back in the summer, only for the midfielder to ultimately U-turn and decide to stay put in San Sebastian.

However, The Athletic report that the Reds' admiration in the Spain international remains, while there is current uncertainty at Real Sociedad with the club expecting to lose long-term sporting director Roberto Olabe at the end of the season.
