Riyan Parag’s redemption arc: How Rajasthan Royals captain silenced critics and led RR to IPL 2026 playoffs

When Rajasthan Royals (RR) appointed Riyan Parag as captain ahead of IPL 2026, the reaction was immediate and brutal. For many former cricketers and experts, the move felt premature. Parag was still seen as talented but volatile, a player who had not yet fully escaped inconsistency or scrutiny. Questions around his maturity, temperament and tactical awareness dominated conversations even before the season properly began.

As Rajasthan stumbled midway through the campaign, the criticism only intensified.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag was among the harshest voices. After Rajasthan Royals lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad despite posting a massive total, Sehwag openly questioned the franchise’s leadership call. “Rajasthan Royals need to think about Riyan Parag’s captaincy,” Sehwag said, adding that the management had to decide “whether he is the right captain for them.”

Sehwag also criticised Parag’s tactical decisions, particularly the underutilisation of frontline spin options during the chase. At that stage of the season, RR’s campaign appeared to be slipping, and Parag had become the easiest target.

Then came another setback against Delhi Capitals. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar slammed one of Parag’s bowling calls during the death overs, calling the move “suicidal” after Rajasthan’s gamble backfired badly. The criticism was no longer just about results; it had become about whether Parag truly possessed leadership instincts at the highest level.

What followed, however, became the defining phase of his captaincy. Instead of retreating into defensive cricket, Parag responded by becoming bolder. Rajasthan Royals started playing with greater clarity and aggression. His bowling rotations became more proactive, field placements sharper, and match-ups more calculated. RR repeatedly attacked inside the powerplay rather than waiting for games to drift away.

One of Parag’s biggest successes this season has been the trust he showed in younger players. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Dhruv Jurel and several uncapped names played with freedom instead of fear. The Royals dressing room also remained remarkably calm despite external noise, a sign that the captain still had the backing of his players.

His handling of Jofra Archer also stood out through the campaign. Rather than holding Archer back exclusively for the death overs, Parag often used him aggressively in short bursts to break partnerships and shift momentum. The move repeatedly worked for RR in pressure games.

Perhaps the biggest sign of growth came in how Parag handled defeats. After the loss to Delhi Capitals, he publicly admitted Rajasthan “shouldn’t be in the top four” based on that performance. It was a rare moment of accountability from a young IPL captain under pressure.

Rajasthan Royals eventually finished fourth on the IPL 2026 points table with 16 points from 14 matches, sealing their playoff berth after a commanding win over Mumbai Indians in their final league game. They will now face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator at Mullanpur on May 27.

For years, Riyan Parag was treated as Indian cricket’s favourite punchline. This season, he has forced a change in narrative. The same captaincy call that was mocked at the beginning of IPL 2026 has now become one of the biggest success stories of the tournament.

At 24, Parag has not only led Rajasthan Royals into the playoffs in his first full stint as captain, but also shown an ability to absorb pressure, back his instincts and keep a dressing room together through difficult phases.

Now, with an Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad awaiting in Mullanpur, Parag has the opportunity to take his redemption story even further.
