England’s Women’s T20 World Cup win

Led by Charlotte Edwards, England entered the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup 2009 as one of the favourites and justified that tag with an unbeaten campaign at home.

The squad featured several stars of the era, including Claire Taylor, Sarah Taylor, Katherine Sciver-Brunt, Laura Marsh and Jenny Gunn.

England topped their group by beating India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan handily before defeating Australia by eight wickets in the semi-finals at The Oval to secure a place in the tournament’s first final.

Facing New Zealand at Lord’s, England produced another dominant display. Katherine Sciver-Brunt starred with the ball, returning figures of 3/6 as New Zealand were restricted to 85 in their 20 overs.

England chased down the target with six wickets in hand and 18 balls to spare to become the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup champions.

Claire Taylor finished as England’s leading run-scorer in the tournament with 199 runs in five matches and was named Player of the Tournament.

However, it was a ruthless and miserly bowling attack which was central to England’s triumph in 2009. India, in the group stage, and Australia in the semis were the only two teams to cross double digits against the hosts in that edition.

Sri Lanka managed 68/8 while Pakistan were bundled out for 60. England’s Holly Colvin finished as the edition’s top wicket-taker in the edition with nine wickets.

The win rounded off a remarkable year for the English women’s cricket team, which also saw Charlotte Edwards and Co. win the Ashes and the Women’s ODI World Cup.

England’s Women’s T20 World Cup near misses

England’s title defence in the West Indies was short-lived as the team failed to make it past the group stage. They were unlucky not to make the knockouts as a Super Over loss to Australia in the group stage proved detrimental to their chances.

However, they bounced right back in 2012. England made the final after defeating New Zealand in the semi-finals but fell short against Australia in the title clash.

Two years later, England again made the title clash in Bangladesh, this time at the expense of the Proteas in the semis. Charlotte Edwards’ charges, however, fell short once more against the Aussies.

Following a semi-final finish in 2016, England returned to the final in the West Indies in the 2018 edition, this time with Heather Knight at the helm. However, Australia won the match by eight wickets to deny England a second title.

England were semi-finalists in 2020 and 2023 but were ousted from the group stage at the last edition held in 2024.

England’s records at Women’s T20 World Cup

In 2023, England posted 213/5 against Pakistan in Cape Town, setting the highest team total in Women’s T20 World Cup history. It is also the only 200-plus score in the tournament across the first nine editions.

They won the match by 114 runs, marking the biggest victory margin (by runs) in the Women’s T20 World Cup records.

Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt’s unbeaten 169-run stand for the third wicket against Thailand at Canberra in 2020 is also the highest partnership by any pair in the Women’s T20 World Cup to date.
