The new Gers gaffer won the Champions League in Germany as hansi Flick's assistant and wants Bears to adopt Bavarian club's mindset

Rangers new boss Danny Rohl says he wants to instil a Bayern Munich-style mindset at Ibrox., writes Scott McDermott in Bergen.

The German coach was assistant to gaffer Hansi Flick when the Bundesliga giants won the Champions League in 2020.

Rohl was educated in players’ mentality at the Allianz Arena and he wants his Rangers squad to adopt similar traits.

The 36-year-old is preparing for his first game in charge - a Europa League tie away to Brann Bergen tonight (Thurs).

But he’s adamant that if they’re going to be successful and win titles, their mental strength will need to be of Champions League standard.

Rohl is convinced getting the Rangers job has now given him the chance to win silverware.

And he wants to get off to a flier in Bergen.

Rohl said: “It was amazing (to win the CL). When we started our journey and Hansi took over as head coach - we couldn’t imagine at the end of the season we’d have this big title in your hands.

“I learned a lot in this time about mindset and this is exactly what we need in our club.

“It was special. Players can play football but they were ready to invest in parts of the game like pressing and hunting.

“This is so important. We have individual quality here but you have to understand it’s not just about that.

“If you think that’s not enough to win games, you can take a huge step forward.

“And if you achieve this together, it’s a dream come true.

“If you win titles as a head coach, it’s amazing.

“I had this experience as an assistant but as a head coach is the next thing.

“That is a big goal for my career as well and now I have a good opportunity.

“We have the chance to win something but first we have to start to win games.

“We know that it's about hard work and not just talking.

“In the last two days I talked a lot and hopefully we will now see a good game from our side.

“Against Brann, I expect it to be a fight. We have to take that fight.”

The bookies have Rangers as underdogs against Brann after a dismal start to their Europa League campaign.

They’ve already lost to Genk and Sturm Graz under ex-gaffer Russell Martin and have to start winning to have a chance of qualification.

Rohl quite likes that Brann are favourites for the tie.

He’s promised some changes to the Rangers team and believes they can get a positive result.

Rohl said: “We have zero points and our opponent has three, they have won one more game than us.

“So at the moment they are doing really well and they have that advantage.

“But for me it’s not a bad thing to be an underdog.

“It is sometimes smart to go into a game like that - if you have the right mindsight.

“That is the crucial thing tomorrow.

“We will maybe have some changes in the starting 11.

“But I’ve been honest with my team. In two days, I’ve had to take impressions from videos and training sessions.

“You need a bit more time to know all the details. That’s important for me as a coach because I like to make adjustments during the game.

“I have to understand which players I can bring in for different situations.

“That’s something I have to learn very soon. I spoke to them about basic things, I didn’t want to overload them with too much detail.

“But we need some things to improve, especially in Europe when you have such a big game ahead.

“We have to understand how we go into such a game.”
