2026/27 Edition: The Maybank Manchester United Card gamble

3
Pop quiz: What was the most-improved credit card over the past year?

The truly clueless might point to the HSBC Revolution’s 8 mpd renaissance, or the HSBC Premier Mastercard’s insane 106,200 miles welcome offer, or the OCBC Rewards Card’s seemingly-evergreen 6 mpd on Shopee and Lazada.

But those really in the know will be unanimous in their response: the Maybank Manchester United Card.

Cast your mind back to April 2025, when the hapless Ruben Amorim led the Red Devils to 11 wins out of 38 games — the fewest in any season since Maybank’s cobrand card debuted in 2012/13.

It was enough to suspect that Maybank, in an attempt to minimise rewards costs, had secretly replaced the starting line-up with a rabble of badly-disorientated fish, though to be fair, the fish would have less issues finding the net than Rasmus Højlund.

Outrageous: The Maybank Manchester United Card’s epic devaluation

But 2025/26? Goodness me, what a turnaround.

Under the inspired leadership of Michael Carrick — though one gets the sense that even Michael Scott could make better managerial decisions than Ruben Amorim floundering with a mini-tactics board in the cold Grimsby rain — Manchester United powered to a third-place finish, with 20 wins and 11 draws bringing back the happy days.

So, with the 2026/27 season just around the corner, what does this campaign hold for Maybank Manchester United Cardholders?

There’s no change to the Maybank Manchester United Card’s mechanics this season, following a July 2025 revamp which replaced the hybrid system of miles and cashback with a four-tiered rewards scheme.

*This is in no way meant to be an insinuation that “Man Utd Loss” is synonymous with “Regular Day”

If Manchester United wins an EPL game, cardholders earn 2.8 mpd on all SGD and FCY spend that day, capped at S$2,000 per win

If Manchester United draws an EPL game, cardholders earn 1.6 mpd on all SGD and FCY spend that day, capped at S$2,000 per draw, and one draw per calendar month

If Manchester United loses an EPL game, or on non-match days, cardholders earn an uncapped 1.12 mpd on all SGD and FCY spend

However, if you’re spending on the following categories (which Maybank dubs “Selected Categories”), then special rules apply.

Category MCC Real Estate Agents and Managers – Rentals 6513 Educational Institutions / Schools 8211, 8220, 8241, 8244, 8249, 8299 Hospitals, Medical, Pharmacies 4119, 5047, 5122, 5912, 5975, 5976, 8011, 8021, 8031, 8041, 8042, 8043, 8049, 8050, 8062, 8071, 8099 Business Services (Not Elsewhere Classified) 7399 Utilities 4900 Telecommunications 4812, 4814

Spending on Selected Categories in SGD will earn an uncapped 0.4 mpd.

Spending on Selected Categories in FCY will earn 1.12 mpd on a regular basis, 1.6 mpd when Manchester United draw, and 2.8 mpd when Manchester United win, with the latter two scenarios subject to the aforementioned S$2,000 spending cap and one draw per month

MCC 7399 is used by CardUp, unfortunately, so there’s no opportunity to earn 2.8 mpd on your bill payments, as nice as that would be.

Here’s an illustration of how the Maybank Manchester United Card’s bonus mechanism works:

Manchester United play an EPL match on 20 August 2026 (UK time) and win

The first S$2,000 charged to the Maybank Manchester United Card on 20 August 2026 from 12.00 a.m to 11.59 p.m (Singapore time) receives a bonus 1.68 mpd (total 2.8 mpd)

And therein lies the gamble at the heart of the card. Because the UK is 7-8 hours behind Singapore, and most EPL matches take place in the mid to late afternoon, it’s rare that you’ll be able to confirm a result in advance of spending.

How’s the fixture list for this season?

Here’s the complete list of Manchester United’s EPL fixtures for the 2026/27 season (do remember that the fixture list is only provisional, and is subject to change — and will almost certainly change).

I’ve put a ✅ next to the matches which will conclude before the end of day in Singapore, based on a 90-minute match with a 15-minute break.

Based on the current schedule, 12 out of 38 games will conclude before midnight in Singapore.

Yes, some of them end at 11.45 p.m, but there’s no rule saying you can’t spend until the final whistle. If you’re convinced that a Manchester United win is inevitable — and how can a team strong enough to carry Joshua Zirkzee possibly lose? — then go ahead and spend. Protip: If you’re spending the full S$2,000, make sure to request your complimentary KLIA Express VIP Service too!

I consulted the experts (read: I plugged the fixtures list into ChatGPT), who have come to the consensus that 21 wins is the expected performance this year, and that you should focus your spending in:

August: Hull (A), Ipswich (H)

April: Hull (H), Ipswich (A), Crystal Palace (H)

May: Coventry (A), Bournemouth (A), Leeds (H), Spurs (A), Fulham (H)

Assuming you spend S$2,000 per match day, that’s 117,600 miles (well, assuming you know which days the wins come on), which is enough for a one-way Business Class ticket to Manchester (because why would you ever want to return?).

How have previous seasons gone?

The Maybank Manchester United Card debuted during the 2012/13 season, when Manchester United swept to the title by winning 28 out of 38 matches, an astounding win ratio of 74%.

It’s been something of a wandering in the wilderness since then, with the average win ratio down to 50%, but the most recent season shows that things have indubitably turned around (there’s no dead cat bounce in football…right?).

⚽ Manchester United EPL Performance

(since launch of Maybank Man Utd Card) Season Win/Total % Manager 2012/13 28/38 74% Alex Ferguson 2013/14 19/38 50% David Moyes 2014/15 20/38 53% Louis van Gaal 2015/16 19/38 50% Louis van Gaal 2016/17 18/38 47% Jose Mourinho 2017/18 25/38 66% Jose Mourinho 2018/19 19/38 50% Jose Mourinho & Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 2019/20 18/38 47% Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 2020/21 21/38 55% Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 2021/22 16/38 42% Ole Gunnar Solskjaer & Ralf Rangnick 2022/23 23/38 61% Erik ten Hag 2023/24 18/38 47% Erik ten Hag 2024/25 11/38 29% Erik ten Hag & Ruben Amorim 2025/26 20/38 53% Ruben Amorim & Michael Carrick

Conclusion

The Maybank Manchester United Card experienced a tremendous turnaround in fortunes last season, as the squad discovered that good things happen when you put the ball in the opponents’ net.

So there’s good reason for cardholders to be optimistic, and perhaps the only question is how many consecutive wins the team will rack up before Maybank is financially obligated to discontinue the card.
