Dane Sweeny exits US Open after loss to Luciano Darderi

Australian tennis player Dane Sweeny ended his US Open singles campaign in New York, United States, losing in the third round to 21st-seeded Italian Luciano Darderi — 4:6, 3:6, 3:6. Sweeny was Australia’s last remaining representative in the tournament’s singles draws, ABC News Australia reports.

Sweeny’s performance at the tournament

The 25-year-old Sweeny was ranked 123rd in the world and entered the main draw at the last moment. Following two late withdrawals from the tournament, Tennis Australia awarded him a reciprocal wild card that had initially been intended for Alexei Popyrin.

During the match against Darderi, the Australian complained of a hip injury. After the match, he described the week in New York as career-changing, while also expressing disappointment with his own play. According to Sweeny, he lacked his usual sense of pace and rhythm and made numerous unforced errors.

Despite the defeat, Sweeny reached the round of 32 at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career. He will receive $402,500 in prize money and, according to preliminary calculations, will rise to 109th in the world rankings — his best result. If he enters the top 100 before the end of the season, he will earn direct entry into the Australian Open for the first time.

Eliminations of American finalists

Several American US Open finalists from previous years were also eliminated in the third round. Ninth seed Taylor Fritz lost to Argentine Francisco Cerundolo — 6:3, 6:4, 3:6, 4:6, 4:6. For Fritz, the 2024 finalist, this was his earliest US Open exit in four years, while Cerundolo reached the fourth round for the first time.

Madison Keys lost to China’s Zheng Qinwen — 6:1, 6:7 (3:7), 5:7 — after failing to convert a 5:0 lead in the deciding set. Zheng will play Iga Swiatek in the next round after Swiatek defeated Czech player Marie Bouzkova in two tiebreaks.
