Manchester United have been linked with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, and Unai Emery provides an update on the shot-stopper's future.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has admitted that he does not know if Emiliano Martinez will be at the club after Monday's transfer deadline amid interest from Manchester United.

The Red Devils have started their season in poor fashion, winning one, drawing one and losing two of their four games in all competitions in 2025-26.

Head coach Ruben Amorim has so far utilised goalkeeper Altay Bayindir in the Premier League in place of Andre Onana, but the shot-stopper has so far failed to impress.

United have been linked with the signature of Martinez, and the Argentine was not in the Villa squad that lost against Crystal Palace on Sunday, with speculation regarding an exit to Old Trafford ramping up.

Emery was unable to give a definitive verdict on Martinez's future, telling reporters: "We will see tomorrow. I cannot tell anything more. I don't know, this is the reality. We will see tomorrow. It is not helping us. One of the circumstances not helping."

United will have to act quickly if they are to sign the goalkeeper considering the transfer window will close at 7PM on Monday.

Can Martinez get Manchester United Champions League football?

Manchester United have focused on rebuilding his side's offensive ranks, bringing in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko for nearly £200m.

Despite the club's expenditure up front, the failure to reinforce in other areas has cost the club already this term.

Onana was at fault of Grimsby Town's second goal when the Red Devils were knocked out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Bayindir struggled to deal with a corner that led to Arsenal's winning goal in the club's opening game of the Premier League season, and given they only lost 1-0, the responsibility of the defeat arguably lay at the feet of the shot-stopper.

Though it is difficult to say for certain if Martinez can elevate United to the Champions League, the addition of a goalkeeper is undoubtedly necessary.

Is Ruben Amorim making a mistake in the summer transfer window?

United have history of signing players past the peak of their powers, with the likes of Casemiro added to the squad despite the risk of decline.

Martinez will be 33 on September 2, and while goalkeepers can have prolonged careers at the top level, the Villa shot-stopper was more prone to errors in 2024-25.

If United can sign the veteran for a reasonable fee, perhaps the acquisition of Martinez could be justified, but Amorim must make sure that the goalkeeper can still contribute significantly before sanctioning a sale in order to avoid further scrutiny.
