On January 7, 2025, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the nominees for the Men's and Women's Player of the Month awards for December 2024. In the Men's category, the nominees are India's Jasprit Bumrah, Australia's Pat Cummins, and South Africa's Dane Paterson.

India's pace sensation, Bumrah, was named the Player of the Series in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy after taking 32 wickets in five matches.

In December, he played in three Test matches, claiming 22 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls—one in Brisbane and another in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. With a rating of 907, he further solidified his position as the No. 1 Test bowler, while also achieving the highest rating points ever recorded by an Indian bowler in history.

Meanwhile, Australia's Test captain Pat Cummins led from the front, guiding his team to victory in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In the three Tests played in December, Cummins scored 144 runs and took 17 wickets at an average of 17.64, including a five-wicket haul in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide.

The final nominee in the Men's category is South Africa's fast bowler, Dane Paterson. In the second match of the two-game series against Sri Lanka, the 35-year-old took seven wickets, including a five-wicket haul, playing a key role in helping the Proteas secure a clean sweep over the island nation.

He maintained his strong form in the first match of the series against Pakistan, taking six wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings. The Proteas won the match by two wickets, becoming the first team to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

India's Smriti Mandhana is among the players nominated for the Women's Player of the Month award for December 2024

The nominations for the Women's Player of the Month for December 2024 included India’s Smriti Mandhana, South Africa’s Nonkululeko Mlaba, and Australia’s Annabel Sutherland.

Smriti Mandhana, India’s vice-captain, had an outstanding December, amassing 270 runs in six ODIs, highlighted by a brilliant 105 against Australia in Perth. She also impressed in the T20I series against the West Indies, scoring three consecutive fifties (54, 62, 77) and was named the Player of the Series.

While South Africa’s Nonkululeko Mlaba only took two wickets in three ODIs against England, she shone in the one-off Test match. The 24-year-old spinner claimed 10 wickets in the match, including a six-wicket haul in the second innings, becoming the first South African woman to take 10 wickets in a Test.

The final nominee is Australia’s Annabel Sutherland. The 23-year-old all-rounder had a standout series against India, scoring 122 runs, including a brilliant 110-run knock, and taking six wickets, which earned her the Player of the Series award.

She continued her impressive form in the series against New Zealand, amassing 147 runs in two games, highlighted by an unbeaten 105 in the second ODI. Sutherland also took three wickets, securing another Player of the Series accolade.
