Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has declared that he will participate in a protest rally on Wednesday against the horrific incident at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. His wife, Dona Ganguly , and her dance academy, Dikshamanjari, will also be present at the protest. The protest is being coordinated by Diksha Manjari, Dona Ganguly’s dance group. The protest march is expected to start from Behala Chowrasta around 7.30 PM.

"Girls from my dance school wanted to join the RG Kar protest movement demanding justice. I have supported them. I will also walk in protest. We plan to walk peacefully, without making too much noise," she was quoted as saying by ETV Bharat.

Sources close to Sourav Ganguly told Times Network that Ganguly was very upset after one of his bytes on the RG KAR incident ( given on Saturday while he was attending an event in Kolkata) was misinterpreted, and he ( along with his family) was targeted on social media.

Earlier on August 19, Ganguly changed his profile picture to black and joined thousands of users on social media to show support for the trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital who was murdered in a gruesome crime.

This was after the former BCCI President had courted controversy on the RG Kar case by his comments in the media. “I don’t think everything should be judged on a stary incident. There is no room to think that everything or everyone is not safe for this (incident). Such accidents happen all over the world. It is wrong to think that girls are not safe. Not only in West Bengal, but everywhere in India, women are safe. Where we live is the best place. One should not judge by one incident," Ganguly had said while attending an event in Kolkata last Saturday.

"I don't think everything should be judged on an isolated incident. There is no room to think that everything or everyone is not safe for this Such accidents happen all over the world. So it is wrong to think that girls are not safe. Not only in West Bengal, but everywhere in India, women are safe. Where we live is the best place. One should not judge by one incident," Ganguly had said.

Ganguly soon faced backlash on social media for his comment, especially when he mentioned that West Bengal should not be judged based on one incident. However, on Sunday, Ganguly issued a clarification, saying that his earlier statement was misinterpreted. “I don’t know how what I said last Sunday was construed or interpreted. I have said it earlier as well that (the crime) it’s a terrible thing. Now, the CBI (and the) police are investigating the matter. It’s very shameful what has happened,” the 52-year-old said.

Sources also told Times Now that Ganguly was very upset about the entire RG KAR incident—he himself being a son, father, husband. After the Saturday event in Kolkata, Ganguly left for some work in Mumbai. He has returned to Kolkata from Mumbai today.

Ganguly and his team have been considering holding a protest regarding the incident for the last few days, but because he was in Mumbai and he was subjected to public rage after his controversial statement, he was waiting for things to calm down.

Finally, he will hit the street tomorrow.
