Jasprit Bumrah was India’s best bowler in the first Test of the ongoing five-match series against England. The 31-year-old pacer, who is ranked first among ICC Test bowlers, bowled 24.4 overs in the first innings and picked up five wickets for 83 runs. He remained wicketless in the second innings but didn’t concede many runs as well. Bumrah, who was the only bowler to make life difficult for English batters in the series opener, which India lost by five wickets, is doubtful for the second Test.

It has been reported by Indian media that as part of his workload management, Bumrah will skip the second India-England Test in Birmingham from July 2 to 6. Bumrah’s absence will be a big setback for Shubman Gill & Co. at Edgbaston, a venue where India have never won a Test match before.

If Bumrah misses out, then Mohammed Siraj will lead India’s bowling attack along with Prasidh Krishna, and one out of Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh will be the third seamer.

Since making his Test debut for India against England in Ranchi last year, Akash Deep has played seven Tests and has 15 wickets to his name. On the other hand, Arshdeep is yet to make his red-ball debut for Team India, but he has achieved great success for India in white-ball cricket. The left-arm pacer is India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is and has impressed with his bowling performances in ODIs as well.

Siraj and Krishna played in the series opener as well and picked up 2 (2+0) and 5 (3+2) wickets, respectively. Krishna, who won the Purple Cap in IPL 2025, conceded runs at an economy of more than six in both innings, but despite that, he will continue to play because India have no other option in Bumrah’s absence.

If Bumrah misses out, then Indian team management could add Kuldeep Yadav as well to the playing XI in place of Shardul Thakur. Shardul only bowled six overs for India in the first innings and 10 in the second and failed to do much with the bat in both innings. India will need a specialist bowler more than an all-rounder in Birmingham to assist the three pacers, and that’s where Kuldeep can come into play.

Nitish Kumar Reddy is another option Indian team management could consider as Shardul’s replacement, but since the batters did a fine job in the Leeds Test, it will make more sense to play a specialist bowler than a batting all-rounder.

It is highly unlikely that Indian team management will make changes to the batting unit.

India’s strongest XI for 2nd England Test without Jasprit Bumrah: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, B Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (WK), Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj
