Love Saves The Day, Shindig and T20 cricket wins

It doesn't always happen, but the sun has arrived just in time for this bank holiday weekend and the many events taking place in the West.

Festivals such as Shindig and Love Saves The Day have drawn large crowds. But plenty of things have been going on away from the music and lights.

This week volunteers have been busy knitting pairs of hearts to offer comfort for hospital patients at the end of life.

And 50,000 children have now been trained to ride a bike safely in Wiltshire.

Arms up: Day one of Love Saves The Day saw thousands of music fans heading to Ashton Court to party.

What a night: Gloucestershire fans saw their team record a victory in their Vitality Blast on Friday, beating Warwickshire.

Healing stitches: Volunteers have been knitting pairs of hearts for Bristol and Weston Hospitals Charity. One heart stays with a patient when they die, and the other is given to a loved one.

One relative said she was "brought to tears" and it gave her "enormous comfort" to be able to "hold on to a piece of her husband's heart forever".

Finishing touches: Europe's largest street art festival – Upfest in Bristol which runs until 31 May – has transformed the city into a giant "open-air gallery". There are 150 new murals, including one to mark Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday.

Seeking shade: While the sun was preferable to showers at the Shindig Festival, ticket holders kept cool under the trees or parasols. The sun is forecast to keep shining for the event, which finishes on Sunday.

Best foot forward: After an epic 650-mile fundraising walk on the South West Coast Path, James Hirst has reached the end of his challenge. He visited Salisbury Hospice this week to present a cheque for £10,000 to the charity that cared for his mum, Nikee, in her dying days.

Voted in: Warminster Town Council's youngest ever mayor is now in office after Jack Jones, 36, was unanimously elected for the post, as well as chairman of the council. Councillor Elizabeth Lee was made vice chairman and deputy town mayor.

That winning feeling: Somerset got their Vitality Blast campaign under way with a victory under the floodlights against the Hampshire Hawks at Taunton on Friday.

Legends and limestone: Wookey Hole Caves has launched an immersive experience to showcase the story of the Witch of Wookey Hole, millions of years of geology and the spirit of exploration beneath the Mendip Hills.

Shooting stars: Team Bath Netball finished their 2026 NXT Gen League home campaign in fine style as they beat Cardiff-based LexisNexis Dragons in front of a large and appreciative crowd.

High honour: Steve Cotterill accepted the Freedom of the Borough of Cheltenham this week. A petition for the town's football club manager to receive the award had gained more than 1,300 signatures.
