Andy Roddick wonders if Roger Federer or other former players will compete in the newly-changed US Open mixed doubles event.

The Swiss Maestro enjoyed great success at Flushing Meadows, winning the singles titles on successive occasions from 2004 to 2008.

But will there be a chance to see Roger Federer grace the courts at Flushing Meadows again, but as a doubles player?

It has been announced that the New York-based Grand Slam is set to undergo a change that includes the mixed doubles, and Andy Roddick has speculated on who could take part.

Andy Roddick mentions who could compete in revamped US Open mixed doubles event

US Open Tournament Director Stacey Allaster appeared on Roddick’s ‘Served’ podcast and stated the mixed doubles tournament will be played in what is known as ‘Fan Week.’

It usually takes place alongside the men and women’s singles and doubles events when the main draw commences, but now the mixed doubles competition will commence a week earlier.

Furthermore, the size of the field will be halved from 32 to 16 teams, and during the first three rounds, teams will need to win up to four games to win a set, while the final will be played with regular sets.

Roddick is delighted with the changes and named three of the sport’s greatest players that could take part, including Federer, the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

“I will tell you this, I want to put this out into the universe right now. There are some recently retired players… I don’t know about a little Roger and Serena action,” he teased.

Has Roger Federer won any mixed doubles titles?

Federer has enjoyed some success in mixed doubles play throughout his illustrious career.

The 43-year-old has won three titles at the Hopman Cup representing Switzerland.

Federer first won his first Hopman Cup title in 2001 alongside five-time Grand Slam winner Martina Hingis.

He then won back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019 while playing alongside Belinda Bencic, who just won the Abu Dhabi Open, her first title since becoming a mother.

Federer famously teamed with Bencic to play Serena Williams and Francis Tiafoe in 2019. The match was played under Fast4 format rules and Federer and Bencic defeated Williams and Tiafoe 4-2, 4-3 (5-3).
