Novak Djokovic shows true colours with message to Kyrgios and Murray

Novak Djokovic had some very kind words when discussing Andy Murray and Nick Kyrgios, two absent stars from the Wimbledon singles draw through injury this year, after claiming a straight-sets win over Vit Kopriva in the first round. Djokovic made a triumph return after not playing a professional match since he was forced to pull out of the French Open, and lent his support to fellow tennis stars who have been struggling with injuries. The seven-time SW19 champion underwent surgery after tearing his meniscus at Roland Garros but ramped up his rehabilitation in order to play, previously admitting that he was taking a risk to be at Wimbledon.

Speaking after his victory, the Serb looked at Kyrgios who was commentating on the match for ESPN and said: “I’ve been fortunate comparing myself to other 37-year-olds. I had injuries like anybody else but they come and go. It’s part of what you do. You just have to accept it and embrace it. "I think Nick Kyrgios is in the commentary box... He’s been struggling a lot with injuries. Talking about major injuries he’s had a few. I’ve been very fortunate to not be away from tennis for long. "As an athlete I empathise with Nick and anyone who’s struggling. You almost feel helpless at times that something isn’t allowing you to come back to what you love most and you’re unable to do your profession for years.”

Djokovic, who had surgery on his right knee 27 days before returning at Wimbledon, then turned his attention to Murray after the two-time SW19 champion pulled out of the singles draw on the morning of his match. Murray could yet play with his brother Jamie in doubles, but felt the need to apologise to his fans after conceding that the "right decision" was made by not entering the competition after undergoing surgery himself on a spinal cyst.
