Will Lionel Scaloni Remain as Argentina National Team Manager Following Lionel Messi’s Retirement?

The Argentina national team has just closed one of the most important chapters in its history. Lionel Messi announced his retirement from the national team after more than two decades wearing the iconic sky-blue and white jersey, leaving an absence that is difficult to measure. But as Argentine soccer begins to process the departure of its greatest reference point, there is one question that cannot be ignored: will Lionel Scaloni remain in charge of the team?

The coach was a fundamental part of the process that took Argentina back to the top of world soccer. Under his leadership, the team won the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and reached another World Cup final in 2026. Much of that transformation was closely tied to the relationship between Scaloni and Messi, a partnership that ultimately became one of the defining symbols of this generation.

The coach’s future is not guaranteed, although his departure does not appear to be imminent either. Scaloni has publicly acknowledged that he needs to rest and reflect on everything that has happened, especially after an extraordinarily demanding cycle.

Following the 2026 World Cup final, the coach explained that he would remain in the position through December and then speak with Claudio Fabián Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA). His comments raised concerns because they came immediately after Argentina once again reached a World Cup final.

With Messi gone, Scaloni would no longer have the player around whom much of his project was built, although the team has enough established leaders to begin a new chapter. The question now is whether the coach is willing to lead another rebuilding process after winning virtually everything there was to win.

Messi’s absence will not be the only major change inside the dressing room. Nicolás Otamendi has already confirmed his retirement from the national team, while players such as Leandro Paredes and Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez have also raised questions about their futures with Argentina.

The situation points toward a generational transition that could become one of Scaloni’s biggest projects if he ultimately decides to stay. Argentina already has players capable of taking on greater responsibilities: Cristian Romero, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister, Lautaro Martínez, and Julián Álvarez are among those expected to move into the spotlight.

They will be joined by a younger generation that has already begun earning opportunities within the squad, including Nico Paz, Franco Mastantuono, Alejandro Garnacho, Valentín Carboni, Giuliano Simeone, and Matías Soulé.

Messi’s retirement leaves a massive void, but Scaloni staying could prevent Argentina from having to undergo two major structural changes at the same time. Losing both the captain and the coach in succession would force the AFA to rebuild much of the project within a very short period.

The biggest question is as much emotional as it is sporting. Scaloni built his era alongside Messi, and now he must decide whether he wants to lead Argentina into its first chapter without the player who defined an entire generation.
