Former India captain M.S. Dhoni was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame during an event in London on Monday. He is among seven new inductees (five men and two women), joining a list of 115 past honorees. Dhoni becomes the 11th Indian, and ninth Indian male cricketer, to receive the honour.

“It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world... It is something that I will cherish forever,” Dhoni told the ICC.

Debuting in 2004, Dhoni took over as India’s captain in 2007 and led the team to titles in the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy.

He played 350 ODIs, scoring 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57, with 10 centuries and 73 fifties. In 90 Tests, he scored 4,876 runs at an average of just over 38, with six hundreds and nearly 300 wicketkeeping dismissals.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri highlighted Dhoni’s composure.

“I’ve never seen anyone with a temperament of that sort... That includes the great Sachin Tendulkar as well, who could get angry at times,” he said.

Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020, a year after his final appearance in the 2019 World Cup semifinal loss to New Zealand.

Other inductees this year include Matthew Hayden, Daniel Vettori, Hashim Amla, Graeme Smith, Sana Mir, and Sarah Taylor.
