Michael Mulholland to join Liverpool

Liverpool’s summer transfer window was dominated by major first-team investment, but the club’s recruitment strategy has extended well beyond the senior squad.

Alongside arrivals such as Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola, the Reds have continued to strengthen their academy with a clear focus on identifying elite young talent early.

Liverpool completed six senior signings during the summer, with disclosed fees putting their net spending at around £200 million.

The headline deal was Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, while Munoz arrived from Osasuna and Jacquet’s move from Rennes was completed after being agreed earlier in the year.

That investment has been accompanied by an increasingly ambitious approach to youth recruitment, and one of the latest developments concerns a teenager who has already attracted significant attention in Northern Ireland.

The 15-year-old Crusaders striker has been lined up for a move to Anfield after impressing during a trial with Liverpool’s U16s.

The information was first reported by respected Liverpool academy source Lewis Bower, whose reporting regularly focuses on developments within the club’s youth setup.

Mulholland has since taken another significant step in his development.

Crusaders promoted the youngster to their first-team setup ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, with the striker included in their senior squad and handed the No.20 shirt.

His eventual move to Liverpool is expected to take place in 2027 because of regulations surrounding the international transfer of young players.

The latest update provides another indication of his rapid progress.

According to Bower, Mulholland scored his first goal for Crusaders on Saturday despite the Northern Irish side suffering a 4-1 defeat.

That represents another milestone for a player who is now gaining valuable experience against senior opposition before making the eventual switch to Merseyside.

His goalscoring record at youth level helps explain why Liverpool moved to secure his future.

Mulholland has previously been credited with scoring an extraordinary 256 goals in a single youth season, while reports from his time with Crusaders also highlighted a remarkable 40 goal contributions in just 13 games.

He has also already represented Northern Ireland at U16 and U17 level, having previously captained the country’s U15 side.

During a UEFA U15 development tournament in Bosnia and Herzegovina, he started all three matches and scored twice against Latvia.

Liverpool’s interest therefore fits a wider recruitment strategy that has already brought Rio Ngumoha to the club and seen the Reds continue to target some of the most promising teenagers available.

Mulholland now has the opportunity to develop in senior football with Crusaders before his anticipated move to Liverpool in 2027.

For the Reds, it is another long-term investment in a player they clearly believe could have a future at Anfield.
