Jamie Carragher slammed David Raya for his costly error in Arsenal's Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Newcastle

Jamie Carragher tore into Arsenal's David Raya after claiming goalkeepers should be banned from playing risky passes into midfielders - following his costly mistake against Newcastle.

Arsenal were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle after a 4-0 aggregate defeat at the semi-finals to miss out on a date at Wembley, with the Gunners well off the pace at St James' Park.

Newcastle went into this game with a 2-0 lead from the first leg and fans might have been nervous that Arsenal could cancel out their advantage.

But the Magpies quickly took control of the game as they took a first-half lead through Jacob Murphy following great work from Alexander Isak.

Newcastle kept pushing for the next goal despite protecting their lead as Arsenal continued to look nervy at the back, and that shakiness was evident as Raya was at fault for their second goal.

Raya was look to start play from the back but opted to pass straight to Declan Rice, who had Newcastle players pressing high and breathing down his neck.

Rice was caught in possession by the relentless Fabian Schar, whose tackle left Anthony Gordon with the simple task of slotting home.

Raya's mistake allowed Anthony Gordon to make it 2-0 on the night

Carragher slammed Raya's decision-making after the game as he tweeted: "Keepers need to be banned from playing those passes into midfield players."

It wasn't just Raya whose performances came under the microscope as Gary Neville tore into centre-backs Gabriel and William Saliba for being left "on toast" by Alexander Isak.

After seeing Isak terrorise the defensive duo to inspire Newcastle's opening goal, he said on commentary: "It’s all about Isak. He is messing the Arsenal centre backs about.

"Look at him against Saliba, he (Saliba) thinks he has got in front and he pops it round the corner.

"What a strike it is, and a piece of good fortune because the pass isn’t into him and it then falls to Murphy. But he has Gabriel and Saliba on toast."
