David Ornstein says what has surprised people within football about Tottenham new-boy Mathys Tel at Bayern

There might be a relative fear of the unknown when it comes to Mathys Tel and ultimately, some might be excited about that while others will be sceptical of how he could fare at Tottenham Hotspur on loan.

With Mathys Tel still being 19 and having not been a regular starter for much of his career so far, how he adapts to the Premier League remains the big question mark surrounding the gifted striker.

Jamie Carragher thinks Tel will thrive at Tottenham but perhaps what is intriguing is that since the Frenchman’s loan move was confirmed, other have also made the case for why the Liverpool legend might be proved wrong.

Tottenham will understandably block out the noise and see for themselves how the youngster adapts to the Premier League.

Why Mathys Tel to Bayern Munich didn’t work as he joins Tottenham on loan

But Tottenham believe Tel is a brilliant young prospect, which prompted them to go out of their way to secure his services on loan.

Even players who have played alongside the former Rennes goalscorer such as Harry Kane stated that Tel will shine at Tottenham.

Reputed journalist David Ornstein has gone on to reveal that people within the game reckon the Lilywhites new-boy simply could not adapt to life at Bayern Munich.

Ornstein said on The Athletic FC podcast: “It hasn’t worked, people around the European football scene with much better expertise than me say that he just hasn’t acclimatised to the step up as well as people thought, maybe it’s the pressure, the expectation or Harry Kane leading the line for Bayern Munich.”

Luckily for Spurs, Ange Postecoglou told Tel he loves his game, citing the Sarcelles-born attacker’s speed and versatility as his favourite traits. While Kane has dubbed Tel as an “outstanding talent” as well; stamps of approval that stack up in the highly-rated forward’s favour.

Interestingly, Arsenal pulled out of a deal to sign Tel, with Mikel Arteta’s reasons being that he was only interested in bringing players who would impact their side rather than making any move just for the sake of it.

David Ornstein said: “Mikel Arteta didn’t just want to bring in a body.”

“[Arsenal’s view was] We need someone that makes us better, and makes an impact on the team.”

However, Chelsea tried to hijack Tottenham’s move for Tel when he was at the airport waiting to fly to London.

But thankfully for Tottenham, the Bayern loanee’s mind was made up as he will now have a battery in his back to silence his critics in N17.
