India captain Rohit Sharma’s mother Purnima got emotional seeing her son after he led the team to a historic T20 World Cup triumph on Thursday, July 4. Notably, team India finally returned from Barbados after being stranded in the country for three days and landed in Delhi.

The entire team got a rousing reception from fans who had gathered to welcome the World Champions at the airport. The Men in Blue were also hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a special breakfast meet and later travelled to Mumbai for an open bus victory parade.

The Indian skipper also met his parents Gurunath and Purnima Sharma upon his arrival in Mumbai as his mother got emotional seeing him. Purnima repeatedly kissed and hugged Rohit in a heartwarming moment which was captured by the media.

Rohit's brilliant form in T20 World Cup

Notably, Rohit played a pivotal role in India’s successful campaign being the second-highest run scorer of the tournament. The opening batter gave explosive starts to the team scoring 257 runs from eight innings at an average of 36.71 and a strike rate of 156.70 with three fifties to his name.

The Indian captain started the tournament with a brilliant knock of 52* (37) against Ireland. His best innings came against Australia in the Super 8 clash as smoked the Australian bowlers all over the park scoring a breathtaking 92 (41) with the help of seven fours and eight sixes.

The Nagpur-born cricketer was also adjudged the Player of the Match for his scintillating innings as India pushed Australia on the verge of elimination with a 24-run win. Rohit’s third half-century came against England in the crucial semi-final where he scored 57 (39) with the help of six fours and two sixes.

Meanwhile, following the victory, Rohit joined MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev in the elite list of Indian captains to have won the World Cup for the country. The 37-year-old finally got his hands on the silverware after the team faltered in the previous two finals in 2023.
