49ers sign Kevin Givens, three more players to practice squad

The 49ers are gearing up for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season and are ready to head to Melbourne, Australia, to take on the Los Angeles Rams. And after Sunday's 53-man roster cut deadline, the 49ers keep adding to their practice squad, signing four players on Tuesday.

The 49ers signed defensive lineman Kevin Givens, defensive lineman Vincent Anthony Jr., defensive back Brandon Codrington and offensive lineman Foster Sarell. Givens, an undrafted free agent in 2019, has played for the 49ers from 2019-2025, and after being released on Aug. 5, he returns to San Francisco's practice squad ready to prove he can contribute in 2026.

Sarell, a former standout at Stanford, joins the 49ers after he was cut by the Denver Broncos. An undrafted free agent in 2021, he also has spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants and Washington Commanders.

Codrington joined the NFL in 2024 as an undrafted free agent, signing with the New York Jets. In two seasons playing for the Jets, Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans, he has nine tackles, two fumble recoveries and one pass defended. Codrington played college football at North Carolina Central and was a First-team All-MEAC selection and a two-time Third-team All-MEAC selection.

Anthony Jr. is in his rookie season, signing with the Kansas City Chiefs after the 2026 NFL Draft. Playing college football at Duke from 2022-2025, Anthony Jr. had 7.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss and a forced fumble in his senior season.

The 49ers' main focus is on their 53-man roster, but with injuries a big part of the game, seeing any of these players contribute at some point in the season is not farfetched.
