The first turf has been cut at the site of the new multi-use Community Sports Hub building at Boscawen Park in Truro.

The ceremony was carried out by Truro Mayor Chris Wells to kick off the £5.2m project to provide new and improved indoor and outdoor sports and leisure facilities at the park.

The scheme is funded by Truro Town Deal, which was awarded £23.6m of government money for projects to boost the city, and is supported by Cornwall Council.

Truro's mayor said the improvements bring to fruition the town council's "long-term ambition" to improve the community and sports facilities at the park.

Alan Stanhope, who chairs the Truro Town Deal Board said it was "a sound investment in Truro's future, adding high-quality sports and leisure facilities that will benefit residents of all ages".

The children's play area, formal gardens, tennis courts and cafe will stay open whilst the building work, which is expected to take nine months, gets under way.

The town council said the pitch used for boules and pétanque would also stay open for the majority of the building work.

Work started in August to improve the grass playing pitches so they can be used for longer periods of the year.

The pitches will remain closed to allow a new grass surface to get established after drainage works finish later in September.

Competitive sports are expected to can resume there in April 2026.
