Alex Eala meets Jordan Clarkson in New York

Two Filipino sports champions met in New York as Alexandra "Alex" Eala crossed paths with Jordan Clarkson ahead of the US Open singles tournament.

Eala and Clarkson talked about their Filipino roots in a meeting featured in a video posted by ESPN.

“I wear my culture on my sleeve. I’m sure you can understand. It brings so many people together,” Eala said, while congratulating Clarkson on winning the 2026 NBA title with the Knicks.

“It’s crazy that I’m meeting you and how people can connect through culture and just nostalgia. I think it’s just a really powerful thing.”

Clarkson, who played previously with Gilas Pilipinas, talked about what it means to be Filipino in the global community.

“You know, when you got Filipino blood, you take the whole country with you to hold pride, and we’re everywhere,” he said.

“It’s like I don’t think any other nationality does it the same. Like, I cross a Filipino on the street and I would know like that,” Eala replied.

“I would know if it was you, definitely,” she added in jest.

The two also talked about their roles as Filipino athletes on the global stage.

“We’re doing a lot for the country and the culture, so I think this has been a big year for the culture,” Clarkson said.

“In general, like here, there’s so many Filipino spots. It’s crazy,” Eala replied.

“The Philippines is basketball crazy,” Eala said.

“You’re leading the way in tennis,” Clarkson replied, as the DC Open champion noted that she is also doing her part.

“I’m proud of you,” Clarkson said.

In a separate Instagram post, Clarkson shared a photo with Eala with the caption, “Keep being special twin, good luck! Kill it!”

Eala replied, “Coming from you, da best.”

Eala will face Mary Stoiana in the first round of the US Open, with the singles draw set to begin Sunday in New York.
