Based on the numbers of the WTA singles rankings, Aryna Sabalenka remains the long-undisputed world No. 1; since October 2024, no one has surpassed the 28-year-old at the top.

The 2026 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year has contested six of the past nine Grand Slam singles finals and is now looking to add to her four major titles so far.

However, Sabalenka's third-round exit at the Italian Open means that Elena Rybakina could close the gap to 470 points heading to the next major at Roland-Garros. The world No. 2, who clinched the Australian Open title against Sabalenka at the start of the season, has a fifth (240 versus 1,300) of the points to defend in Paris.

Poland's Iga Świątek and Coco Gauff of the USA are just behind in their own battle for third spot, while Austria's Anastasia Potapova is set to be seeded after being on the cusp of dropping out of the top 100 last month.
