Copa de la Reina 2026: How la Masia, an unmistakable identity, and the world’s best players fuel FC Barcelona Femení's quadruple charge

FC Barcelona are closing in on another dominant showing in Spain, with the next instalment of their potential football quadruple sweep on the horizon for the 2025/2026 season.

Up against long-time rivals Atletico Madrid, the Copa de la Reina presents the chance to complete the domestic treble after already sealing the league title and their sixth Supercopa de España.

Unbeaten since early November, when Real Sociedad edged them 1-0 away from home, they are undoubtedly the favourites to lift silverware once more on Saturday (16 May).

Ahead of the final, Olympics.com looks at some key things contributing to a standout campaign from one of the best teams in the world.

La Masia strikes again

La Masia is one of, if not the, most impressive academies in European football. On both the men’s and women’s sides of the game, it consistently produces talented players primed for the big stage.

Whether it is Lionel Messi or Aitana Bonmatí, FC Barcelona have been the biggest beneficiaries of the club’s youth set-up.

This term, Barça called on it once more to help navigate a gruelling schedule that has stood between them and a quadruple. When their squad was tested with injuries, particularly with key midfielder Bonmati sidelined for several months, La Masia provided the answer to their problems.

Clara Serrajordi stepped up when it mattered most. Coming into the side after making four appearances last term, the 18-year-old took to it like a duck to water in central midfield. In the league alone, she racked up 24 appearances – starting 19 of those – to assist the likes of Alexia Putellas and Patri Guijarro in the middle of the park.

Claudia Pina, another product of the wildly successful academy, has continued to impress with another stellar campaign for the Catalan club. The 24-year-old has been in and around the first team since 2018, when she was just 16, and has developed into one of their most valuable assets this term.

Pina leads the way in many metrics, bagging over 30 goal involvements this campaign, 25 of which coming in the league alone.

Fresh faces or familiar superstar names, La Masia continues to underpin the success of the Spanish side, and the 2025/26 season has proved no different.

FC Barcelona: One club, one style

Head coaches come and go in football, and where many differ in their style and approaches to teams, playing identity is the one constant that Barça will always have.

It is integrated into the youth systems and is prevalent in both senior sides. It is why their academy products find it much easier to integrate into the team than if they were elsewhere.

That kind of thinking informs their recruitment, too. For Spain’s best, it doesn’t matter how good a player is, they must be able to play the Barcelona way.

Few understand that more than Polish striker Ewa Pajor, who made the switch from Wolfsburg to Barça in 2024. The move proved a challenge at first, but playing with some of the world’s best makes it easier to settle in.

“Barcelona play so well with the ball,” she said in an interview with The Guardian.

“When I speak with Alexia [Putellas] or Aitana [Bonmati] in training they tell me that when they see the ball coming, they don’t think where they want to play, they make that decision before they even receive the ball.

“Once they have the ball, they know exactly what they want to do and that benefits everyone. Barcelona players learn [that] early. Alexia learned that when she was probably 10 and she doesn’t have to think; it’s innate for her.

“Our rivals usually play really low against us, but in one way I have more space because my team moves the ball quicker and I can be in on goal after just one touch.”

Their universally recognised style of play is the reason very few teams can deal with them both domestically and in Europe. Pere Romeu struggled to some extent to truly implement his vision alongside their signature style last season, but it is clear something has clicked for them this term.
