David de Gea has sensationally been linked with a return transfer to Manchester United two years after leaving the club.

United are reportedly making 'checks' into the Spaniard of whom it is said can leave Fiorentina for a small amount. That has supposedly alerted Old Trafford chiefs, who could seek to spring a reunion amid troubles in the goalkeeping department.

Ruben Amorim's first-choice Andre Onana missed pre-season with a hamstring injury but recovered in time for Sunday's Premier League opener vs Arsenal. He was not given the nod with Altay Bayindir selected instead.

The Turkish stopper was outmuscled by William Saliba to only get a weak one-handed punch to a first-half Gunners corner, allowing Riccardo Calafiori to net the only goal of the game.

It has not been a priority position to strengthen for United, but now they are being linked with this stunning change of goalkeepers if De Gea were to return.

The 34-year-old was loved by supporters for his contributions over 12 years at the club. He was part of the last United squad to lift the Premier League and won a further eight trophies.

And only very recently has De Gea outlined his feelings and hope for his former club this season.

After the friendly between United and Fiorentina clash at Old Trafford on Saturday, August 10, De Gea backed them to return to 'where they deserve' in English football.

"I know it’s been some years at United where they have struggled a bit, but this is one of the best clubs in the world,” De Gea began telling Sky Sports News.

"It’s a massive club. Hopefully this year with the signings and the manager starting a new era, they can do something big.

"Let’s see, hopefully they can win something and be there where they deserve."

Whether De Gea would want to come back and potentially add to his 545 United appearances would remain to be seen, though the report suggested he would be open to any role Amorim could offer.

Similarly, United would seemingly be able to accommodate his arrival if a deal turned out cheap enough.
