Enzo Fernandez issues update on his Chelsea future shortly after Champions League exit

Enzo Fernandez cast doubt on his Chelsea future after the Blues were dumped out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain, refusing to confirm whether he would return to Stamford Bridge after the World Cup.

Chelsea hosted the reigning European champions in the round of 16 second-leg on Tuesday night, looking to overturn a three-goal deficit after a frustrating defeat at the Parc des Princes.

They sit sixth in the Premier League despite a poor recent run of form, and have eight matches to crack the Champions League places. Four of their remaining eight league matches are against Big Six opposition.

Asked by ESPN Argentina whether he would be a Chelsea player next season, Fernandez said: “I don't know. Right now I'm focused on here, then there's the World Cup, and we'll see.”

He continued, insisting the Blues were capable of reviving their fortunes and ending the season on a positive note: "Since I arrived at Chelsea, situations like this have happened. It's time to support my teammates.

“We can turn this situation around. There are eight Premier League games left and we need to qualify for the next Champions League, which is what we want. And we want to win the FA Cup, that's what we'll fight for. It's a title, and we play football to win.”

Pressed as to where Chelsea went wrong against PSG, Fernandez added: "We have to congratulate PSG, they were much better than us. I think they beat us very well tactically.

"We couldn't win the series because we lost control in the first leg, in the last 15 minutes. They scored three goals and created a difference.

“We made mistakes and paid for them. And that's football: it's all about details. PSG was able to take advantage of those opportunities in that first game, and then here they scored a goal against us in the first five minutes, and it becomes an uphill battle.”
