Why were Brighton wearing a special kit?

Brighton & Hove Albion wore a special limited-edition Nike kit today in their Premier League match against Arsenal at the Amex Stadium

The club is wearing the unique strip to celebrate 125 years since its formation on June 24, 1901 2

This specific fixture was chosen because it is the closest home game to the anniversary of Albion’s first-ever competitive match, which took place on September 21, 1901.

That historic first match 125 years ago saw Brighton secure a 6-2 victory over Brighton Athletic in the preliminary qualifying round of the FA Cup

The commemorative kit, designed by technical partner Nike, draws direct inspiration from the very first strip worn by the club during the 1901-02 season 6. It features a solid “Mountain Blue” base with a classic polo collar, a short button placket and self-fabric cuffs

To maintain a clean, retro look that honours the pre-commercial era of football, all branding on the shirt is applied in a subtle tonal blue

This means the Nike Swoosh, the American Express front sponsor logo and the club crest are rendered in the exact same shade of blue as the fabric.

The circular club crest has been slightly modified for the milestone, featuring an elegant tonal ribbon with “125 YEARS” written underneath. Inside the collar, players and fans will find a graphic that reads “We are Brighton 1901-2026”.

On the pitch, the players are wearing the blue shirt alongside off-white “Flat Opal” shorts and traditional black socks.
