The Oklahoma defense gave up a 40-yard pass on the first play of the New Mexico drive, and that quickly set up the Lobos in the red zone. They failed to punch the ball into the end zone, but they got on the scoreboard with a 24-yard field goal from Grant Glasgow.

The big pass to start the drive was to tight end Cade Keith, who got behind Sooner cornerback Markel Ford. The freshman was able to track down Keith, but it was a bust that cost OU.

OU started another drive inside its own 5-yard line and it went about as well as it has the last two weeks.

After two unsuccessful runs and a eight-yard swing pass to Xavier Robinson, the Sooners were forced to punt.

After three consecutive drives going in reverse, the Lobos managed positive yardage in their fourth drive of the night, picking up 30 yards on seven plays.

Michael Kern's 40-yard punt pinned the Sooners at their 5-yard line.

John Mateer connected with tight end Hayden Hansen on consecutive passes to get the Sooners on the scoreboard.

First came a 11-yard pass that converted a 3rd-and-11 and gave OU a first down at the New Mexico 29. On the very next play, Mateer hit Hansen again, but this time, Hansen took contact, spun through defenders and got into the end zone for the 29-yard touchdown.

It was Hansen's first touchdown as a Sooner.

OU is driving — after gains of 14 and 11 yards — at the end of the first quarter.

Since his interception on the opening drive, Sooners quarterback John Mateer is 5 for 5 for 44 yards.

OU was called for two false starts on the drive. "These are things you just can't do," former Sooners coach Bob Stoops said on the radio broadcast.

The second quarter will begin with an OU second-and-15 on the New Mexico 45-yard line.

UNM threw two incompletions and had a run go for a 1-yard loss before being forced to punt.

Isaiah Sategna III, back to receive again, didn't have a chance to field the punt as it went into the end zone. The Sooners will take over at their own 20.

OU forced the Lobos to punt before Isaiah Satgena III muffed the punt.

UNM will take over at the Sooners' 39-yard line.

OU recorded one first down after John Mateer found Isaiah Sategna III for 11 yards.

But after failing to convert a third-and-16, the Sooners were forced to punt.

UNM will take over at its 33-yard line.

John Mateer threw an interception on the Sooners' first drive. Mateer avoided pressure, moved to his right and threw a ball late intended for wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III.

After a long week of discussion about OU's offense following its disappointing performance against Michigan, the Sooners turn it over.

OU football vs New Mexico injury update: Michael Fasusi warming up pregame

It doesn't appear Oklahoma offensive lineman Michael Fasusi, who didn't play in OU's loss to Michigan after appearing to re-injure his shoulder against UTEP, will play against the Lobos. He went through stretches but Ryan Fodje took first-team left tackle snaps.

Wide receivers Jer'Michael Carter and Trell Harris were not present during warmups. Harris suffered an injury against the Wolverines and will be out for the foreseeable future, Brent Venables said earlier this week.

Linebacker Cole Sullivan was suited up but not warming pregame. Linebacker Kip Lewis is in street clothes and won't play.

Why OU football shouldn't look past New Mexico

OU's home schedule isn't exactly filled with marquee opponents.

Let's see, Ole Miss and Texas A&M to end the regular season might both be top-10 opponents when they come to Norman. Of course, both might also lose before today is out. And Kentucky becomes a much better opponent if the Wildcats score the upset at Texas A&M today.

But with UTEP, New Mexico and South Carolina rounding out the home slate, there aren't a bunch of bluebloods coming to Norman.

A warning, though: Don't sleep on New Mexico.

The Lobos went 9-4 last season, ripping off six consecutive wins to finish the regular season, then losing in overtime to Minnesota in the Rate Bowl. And head coach Jason Eck and his guys have been impressive so far this season. Even though they haven't played anyone of OU's caliber, New Mexico ranks seventh nationally in scoring (54.0 ppg) and ninth in scoring defense (7.0 ppg).

New Mexico isn't marquee, but that doesn't mean it's a slouch, either.

New Mexico football scouting report for Week 3 vs. Oklahoma

Record: 2-0

Best player: If quarterback Jack Layne hadn't suffered an injury, he'd be a major topic of conversation this week. But with Layne out, the Lobos have relied a lot on running back Scottre Humphrey. Across New Mexico's first two games, Humphrey has rushed 28 times for 174 yards and three touchdowns.

The case for New Mexico: Michigan had a perfect plan — offensively and defensively — against OU. The Wolverines were conservative offensively and waited for Mateer and the Sooners' offense to make a mistake. If Mateer doesn't improve fast, it could be a long day. Eck is a well-respected coach and will have his team ready to play.

The case for OU: Despite the disappointing offensive performance against Michigan, the Sooners are the much more talented team. OU's defense should give the Lobos offense fits. Sooners offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle will likely lean more on a run game that has looked solid through two games.
