Brisbane Broncos defeat Gold Coast Titans, missed tackles count, Cory Paix and Deine Mariner score doubles

The Brisbane Broncos have piled a huge score on the Gold Coast Titans, running away 50-12 victors at the Toowoomba Sports Ground on Sunday afternoon.

The Titans were humbled after 53 missed tackles exposed the side's feeble defence.

In a bright start under new coach Michael Maguire, Cory Paix and Deine Mariner starred for the Broncos with doubles.

Broncos winger Gehamat Shibasaki opened the scoring in the 9th minute following some fancy footwork and a slick pass from Billy Walters, playing five-eighth.

The Bunker was forced to take a look after Walters skipped through the defensive line while Jack Gosiewski stopped in the line, possibly obstructing David Fifita.

The on-field referee initially ruled the play a no-try but review official Kasey Badger overruled the decision after deeming that Fifita initiated contact.

Cory Paix then scored the first of his two tries with a simple dummy half-scoot — sending a message to Maguire that he intends to be the club's starting hooker when the season starts.

Nine minutes later he ran into a clever offload from Corey Jensen close to the tryline before he was subbed out of the game.

Brendan Piakura also grounded the ball for a four-pointer of his own.

The Titans responded on the eve of halftime as AJ Brimson put in a grubber that bamboozled Walters.

Fifita steamed through to score the Titans' only points of the first half as the Broncos took a 24-6 lead into the main break.

The Broncos were again first to score in the second half as Deine Mariner took a high kick from Jock Madden before beating three defenders to score.

He followed up 10 minutes later with his second after dancing around the Titans' defence.

The Broncos continued to run in tries with recruit Latrell Siegwalt beating Thomas Weaver to score before Delouise Hoeter crashed over on the back of some simple passing.

As Brisbane approached 50 points, hulking prop Benjamin Te Kura bulldozed his way over.

The Titans scored a consolation try through fullback Jaylan de Groot in the 67th minute after dummying and crossing over.

But after the Titans missed 53 tackles to the Broncos' 17 with a difference of 514 run metres between the rivals, the side never looked like putting on the pressure.

"I've never seen numbers like that," Greg Alexander said on commentary for Fox League.

Making matters worse for the woeful Titans, the thrashing occurred on coach Des Hasler's 63rd birthday.
