Sam Mather weighing up late transfer exit from Man Utd, offer on the table

Manchester United have a long list of academy players who simply won’t make it at the club, with Sam Mather on this list.

At the age of 21, playing academy football likely no longer serves a purpose for the vast majority of players, and Sam Mather is in this category.

Mather trained with the first team three years ago, but since then, he has failed to develop or evolve as a player, meaning he hasn’t been knocking on the door.

During the 2021/22 season, Mather got 20 goal contributions for Manchester United across the levels, looking every bit as exciting as Alejandro Garnacho, for example.

Mather has spent time on loan at Rochdale and other clubs like Tranmere, but never looked the level required at Old Trafford.

As a result, his time at Manchester United could be coming to a close.

Sam Mather has an offer from the UAE Pro League club on the table

Over the summer, Mather was linked with an exit away from United, as he wanted senior football, which he is very unlikely to receive with the Red Devils.

As a result of his quest for first-team football, Mather was tipped for a move abroad, and Turkey appeared to have emerged as an option for the youngster.

However, Mather’s move to Kayserispor collapsed it became unclear where he would move. But now, the Manchester Evening News has reported that Mather is currently considering an offer from an unnamed UAE Pro League side.

The 21-year-old United academy talent is weighing up the offer, having provided two assists for the U21s this season so far in three games.

The summer saw Mather target a move to Europe, with clubs in Germany, Sweden, and Turkey all showing an interest. Feeling he has outgrown academy football, Mather wants to compete in senior football, and the UAE Pro League gives him this opportunity.

This season, United have no continental football, but Mather could see his UAE move go through, MEN explained, suggesting the club is involved in the AFC Champions League.

This competition is Asia’s equivalent of European football’s top prize and would be a sweetener for Mather.

Mather would be immediately exposed to high levels if this is the case, against the likes of Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad.

This would be very interesting to watch and see how he gets on, and a move to the UAE should see United pocket a higher fee than if it were another European side.
