Football fans eager to catch final showdown

JOHOR BARU: Malaysian football fans are divided ahead of the FIFA World Cup final, with many predicting a thrilling showdown between defending champions Argentina and an exciting Spain that has impressed throughout the tournament.

While Argentina is bidding to retain the title it won four years ago, many fans believe Spain’s youthful squad, fearless style of play and attacking flair could propel the team to world football’s biggest prize.

Private sector employee Ammirul Afdeal Mohd Taufik, 35, believes Spain’s underdog status could work to its advantage against the reigning champion.

“I see Spain as the underdogs, which means they can play with less pressure than Argentina,” he said.

“They have a strong midfield and hungry wingers that could be the key to winning their second World Cup.”

Another private sector employee, Ummi Fatin Suraiaya, 29, feels that Argentina’s experience in football’s biggest stage gives it the upper hand despite the burden of defending its crown.

An Argentina supporter, she said captain Lionel Messi continues to be the driving force behind the team’s success.

“Reaching another final gives Argentina plenty of confidence. The pressure will be there, but even with their three previous triumphs, I believe that Argentina is still hungry for more success,” she said.

Meanwhile, civil servant Annaz Md Nor, 42, admitted that he had initially backed the Netherlands but switched his support after the Dutch were eliminated.

A long-time admirer of the Oranje, he said Spain’s performances convinced him to get behind La Roja.

“Since the Netherlands are out, I’m supporting Spain. Hopefully they can stop Argentina from becoming only the third nation in history to win back-to-back World Cups after Italy and Brazil,” he said.

“Spain have been outstanding. The way they play reminds me of their golden era between 2008 and 2010.”

Argentina booked its place in a second consecutive World Cup final after edging England 2-1 in the semi-finals, while Spain produced a commanding display to defeat France 2-0.

The highly anticipated final has generated excitement among football fans, with many eager to witness a battle between Argentina’s experience and winning pedigree against Spain’s youthful exuberance.

Supporters agree that the final promises to be a fitting climax to a tournament that has delivered memorable matches and standout performances.
