Western Province Veterans Cricket Association selectors Labeeb Fortuin, Fayyaaz Mohiudeen, Arthur Moore and Robbie van Harte have resigned after the announcement of the Western Province Over-50 squad for May 2026’s inter-provincial tournament in Benoni.

Fortuin, Mohiudeen, Moore and van Harte resigned after agreeing on the composition of the 16-man squad, which was different to what the Western Province Veterans Cricket Association announced this week.

The Western Province Over-50 squad will be captained by Green Point Cricket Club’s Alastair Murray.

Murray is among four Green Point Cricket Club representatives in the squad, which also includes United Cricket Club pair Anwell Newman and Reza Salie – and Ottoman Cricket Club duo Ridiwaan Williams and Raafick Hassen.

Williams and Hassen have previously played for Western Province Over-40. Williams won the inaugural Over-40 World Cup with South Africa. Hassen is the husband of Western Province Cricket Association chairperson Fuzlin Levy-Hassen.

Durbanville Cricket Club’s Wayne Tharratt, who has played for South Africa Over-50, has also been selected for WP Over-50 again.

Pinelands Cricket Club batsman Roger Bezuidenhout, who is among the leading run-scorers in this season’s WPVCA league, was not selected for the 2026 Western Province Over-50 squad. Batsman Leon Baird, who is among the top run-scorers in this season’s WPVCA masters league, was also excluded.

Last year, Western Province Veterans Cricket Association selectors Razeen Allie and Wilfred Cilliers resigned, citing “nepotisim and favouritism” ahead of the over-40 inter-provincial tournament in Port Elizabeth. The WPVCA called the allegations “regrettable, unprofessional, personal attacks”.

Border are the reigning over-50 inter-provincial tournament champions. They beat Western Province Over-50 in the 2024 final.

WP Over-50 won the inaugural title in 2022 after beating Titans Over-50 in the final.
