Below, get to know more about Michèle De Bruyne (nee Lacroix):

Michèle and Kevin met online.

The story of how Kevin met his wife, Michèle Lacroix, begins with a tweet. In 2014, he was on loan at Werder Bremen in Germany’s Bundesliga at the time, with only a few thousand followers, when Michèle favorited one of his posts. A friend noticed and urged him to send her a message, but Kevin was reluctant.

“People don’t like me. They don’t get me. She won’t respond," Kevin told him, as he recalled in a 2019 essay for The Players’ Tribune. His friend sent the message anyway, and Michèle responded. The two spent months getting to know each other over text before meeting in person. De Bruyne has been candid about what she meant to his development as a person. “She changed my life in so many ways,” he wrote. “Honestly, I don’t know what I would do without her.”

Kevin proposed at the Eiffel Tower.

Kevin proposed to Michèle in Paris, . He has described the relationship as one that pulled him out of a deeply introverted shell. “People throw around this label of ‘WAGs,’ and I think it’s really a shame,” Kevin wrote in the essay. “Because my wife, she’s the most important person in my life. She sacrificed everything to move away with me when she was 19 years old, to help me follow my dream. We’ve been on this journey together. I look up to her, in a way. She got me to come out of my shell with people a lot, and the way she’s handled everything is remarkable, really.”

The couple got married in Italy in 2017.

Kevin and Michèle tied the knot in June 2017 in Italy. Kevin noted in his Players’ Tribune essay that he did not cry at the wedding—something his wife later used as a reference point when he broke down in tears over a knee injury, having remained dry-eyed through the wedding and the births of his sons.

“Actually, my wife says that there’s something wrong with me. We’ve been together almost seven years, and she had never seen me cry. Even at funerals, I don’t cry,” Kevin wrote. “But then earlier this season, I injured my knee against Fulham, and there was some ligament damage. The doctors told me that I was going to have to be in a brace for a bit. This is always a nightmare, when you can’t even put on your underwear without help. But this was really terrible timing, because my wife had just given birth to our second son the day before. Weddings, funerals, births? It’s nothing. I’m a rock. But if you take football away from me? Forget it. I can’t cope.”

Kevin and Michèle have three children together.

The couple have three children. Their first son was born during the stressful summer of 2015, when Kevin was in the middle of a drawn-out transfer saga involving . The uncertainty of that period, combined with a pregnancy complication that required an emergency hospital visit, became one of the defining moments of De Bruyne's life. “It made me realize that football is not life or death,” he wrote. Their second son was born the day before De Bruyne suffered a knee injury, prompting one of those rare displays of emotion.

The family is involved with several charitable causes.
