Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová has announced her impending retirement from tennis on the eve of her final Wimbledon Championships.

The 35-year-old Czech star is calling an end to a career which spanned 19 years as a professional, beginning in the 2007 season, and in which she reached a career high ranking of world number two in 2011.

Kvitová, who won Olympic bronze at Rio 2016 in women's singles, won the Wimbledon title in 2011 and 2014 and reached the final at the Australian Open in 2019.

Her career also included six Fed Cup (now the Billie Jean King Cup) titles playing for Czechia, and she also won the WTA Finals in 2011.

She hopes to play her final tournament at the US Open at Flushing Meadows in August and September.

"Growing up in my hometown of Fulnek and hitting the first tennis balls with my father on the local courts, I never imagined becoming a professional tennis player, being able to travel the world, and playing in the most beautiful stadiums around the world," Kvitová wrote on social media Thursday (19 June).

"I would never be whom I am today without this beautiful sport, and everything it has given me both on and off the court."
