How master technician Tielemans can transform Man Utd's midfield

Manchester United have wasted no time strengthening their squad this summer.

There are still six weeks of the transfer window remaining and already Michael Carrick has fully refreshed his central midfield for the 2026/27 season.

Andrey Santos arrived first from Chelsea, bringing defensive strength and metronomic midfield passing, and now Youri Tielemans has been signed from Aston Villa.

It is the latter move that really signals Man Utd’s intent – and arguably a new direction under Carrick.

Tielemans, 29, is a win-now signing. He is a highly experienced all-round midfielder with immaculate technique; classy and consistent, just like the best Man Utd midfielders of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Tielemans is a 'big game player' with Man Utd pedigree

It has been a long road to Old Trafford.

Tielemans was a "wonderkid" at Belgian giants Anderlecht, a 16-year-old star destined for the top of the game. After a brief spell at Monaco, he won the FA Cup with Leicester City before spending three years at Villa Park, where he evolved into Aston Villa’s talisman: a midfield engine and pass-master rolled into one.

Villa supporters will remember Tielemans as a player with unusual intelligence and tactical awareness, as comfortable starting moves with incisive passing from the bottom of midfield as he is creating chances with threaded through-balls in the No 10 role.

Others will most remember his stunning FA Cup final winner for Leicester City in 2021 and his magnificent volley that gave Villa the lead in their UEFA Europa League final victory over Freiburg in May.

In those moments, and so many others, Tielemans proved he is a big-game player, a leader on the pitch, and a master technician.

How Tielemans can raise Man Utd's level

There are few Premier League midfielders as naturally talented with the ball at their feet. The one-touch layoff, the sweeping diagonal, the delicate through-ball: Tielemans has immaculate technique and vision.

It is his forward-thinking, line-breaking ability that Carrick will be most interested in, both at the base of midfield – where Tielemans can link the play and get United playing possession football out from the back – and higher up, where his creativity should complement his new captain, Bruno Fernandes.

Comparing Tielemans to Man Utd’s central-midfield options last season, it is clear the Belgium international is an upgrade in many departments and a direct replacement for the departed Casemiro in others.

Although Casemiro outperforms Tielemans on a couple of metrics, both players were near best in class: last season Tielemans ranked fifth among Premier League midfielders for line-breaking passes (Casemiro was fourth) and 13th among midfielders for progressive passes (Casemiro was 11th).

However, the most telling stat of all comes from Sky Sports’ Adam Bate, who found that only Fernandes (451) and Elliot Anderson (377) played more passes in 2025/26 that bypassed four or more opponents than Tielemans (338).

What the numbers can’t capture is the style and panache. Tielemans, benefitting from Unai Emery’s world-class coaching, is superb at finding space between the lines before breaking open the opposition resistance.

He can do this when the opponent is organised behind the ball (against a low block) or by turning under pressure from an advancing player to set his wingers away into space (against a high press).

Man Utd is a club built on attacking traditions, on free-flowing individualism from wingers and forwards. Tielemans is exactly the kind of player who, like Paul Scholes or Carrick himself, can create a platform for others to flourish.

Of all the numbers to present to define Man Utd’s new central-midfield partnership, one in particular jumps out.

Villa and Chelsea have been careful in possession and, tactically, both Unai Emery and Enzo Maresca prioritise control of central midfield through complex passing networks. This, it would seem, is what Carrick wishes to build towards.

And as the table below shows, Tielemans and Santos can complement each other. Tielemans is the creator, Santos the destroyer; Tielemans plays ambitious passes, Santos plays short and smart ones to keep things ticking.
