Arne Slot snubs Jamie Carragher to make Thierry Henry and Arsenal admission after Liverpool win again

Liverpool enjoyed another stunning evening on Tuesday as they swept Bayer Leverkusen aside in the Champions League.

It was a big night for the Reds as they came up against former midfielder Xabi Alonso and his previously unbeatable Leverkusen side.

Prior to the game at Anfield, the German champions had lost just twice since the beginning of the 2023/24 season. Quite remarkable.

But after putting up a decent first-half showing against Liverpool, Alonso’s side crumbled in the second. Cody Gakpo added a goal to a hat-trick from Luis Diaz and Arne Slot made it 14 wins out of 16 matches in charge.

Inevitably, Slot was in good spirits following the result. The Liverpool head coach deserves to lap up what has been an incredible start to life on Merseyside.

And after Slot roasted Jamie Carragher live on air following the final whistle, the Dutchman then hit the Liverpool legend with a second snub just moments later.

Carragher is always just about the most vocal pundit in English football. The former centre-back is usually game for a laugh, too.

And while viewers in the UK will be well used to his excellent tactical analysis and more straight-laced approach, those who catch CBS Sports’ coverage in the US see a different side to Carra.

Alongside Thierry Henry, Micah Richards and host Kate Abdo, the Liverpool academy graduate always seems to having a blast on the CBS Sports Golazo Champions League coverage.

And with Slot appearing on the show for the first time after Liverpool’s win on Tuesday, Richards took the opportunity to ask the Dutchman who his ‘favourite’ on the panel is.

“Do you want the honest answer? Then it’s going to be Kate of course!” Slot smiled.

“But if I have to choose between the three men, then Tony the [Liverpool] press officer will probably tell me I have to choose the one who played for Liverpool. But I came from an era where I watched Dennis Bergkamp a lot for Arsenal together with Thierry Henry, so…”

“Awwww no!” bemoans Carragher. “Thank you coach, thank you coach, thank you coach!” smiles the Arsenal icon.

Arne Slot admits to Arsenal preference

This of course means very little in the long run. Henry was a superb player who earned the admiration of just about everyone in football during his years at Arsenal.

But, nonetheless, it is interesting to hear Slot admit to having a slight soft spot for Arsenal.

The 46-year-old has so far not spoken in too much depth about his early memories of football or where his allegiances lie or anything like that.

And while he is clearly focused on Liverpool in the here and now, it is a funny little detail that Slot will now go head-to-head with Arsenal to win the biggest prizes with the Reds.
