The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the India squad for the England ODI series and the 2025 Champions Trophy on 18 or 19 January. The BCCI were to announce the squad by 12 January initially, but reportedly asked for an extension of the deadline. India are in Group A for the Champions Trophy, along with Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand.

The BCCI had announced India’s squad for the T20I series against England on Saturday, and was expected to reveal the provisional squad for the Champions Trophy by Sunday, but has asked the ICC for an extension for now.

Which leaves us with arch-rivals India and Pakistan – who also happen to be the hosts and defending champions – are the only ones left at the moment.

New Zealand were the second to do so, announcing it early on Sunday, and were followed by Bangladesh and Afghanistan later in the day. Two-time champions Australia and inaugural champions South Africa announced their squads on Monday.

Two-time runners-up England were the first to unveil their provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, having done so on 22 December, with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also including the squad for the white-ball tour of India in the announcement.

Speaking to reporters in Mumbai after a Special General Meeting at the board’s headquarters, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said that the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy as well as that for the three-match ODI series against England is likely to be unveiled by the 18th or the 19th of this month – which is this weekend.

Also missing was opener Yashasvi Jaiswal as well as senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah, but they have been rested, with the latter currently recovering from a back issue.

And a notable exclusion from the Suryakumar Yadav-led squad was Rishabh Pant, with the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee appearing to have gone with Sanju Samson as their preferred option for the wicketkeeper-batter’s slot as well as for one of the two opening positions.

The biggest talking point in India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against England that gets underway on 22 January is the inclusion of senior pacer Mohammed Shami, who has not represented the Men in Blue since the 2023 ICC World Cup, in which he had finished as the highest wicket-taker.

Here’s India’s squad for the T20I series against England that will be taking place between 22 January and 2 February:

While the BCCI will be taking a call on sticking with him as the Test captain later this year when India visit England for a five-match series, Rohit has been a successful white-ball leader and will remain so in the upcoming ODI series against England and in the Champions Trophy.

Rohit Sharma is going through one of the lowest points of his career, and certainly his lowest point as captain, with India suffering a 0-3 whitewash at home against New Zealand before surrendering the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia with a 1-3 loss.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has likely been rested for the T20I series against England and could make his ODI debut against the same team before the ICC Champions Trophy. Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, has likely been dropped from the shortest format with the selectors going with Sanju Samson as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter.

“How can I comment on the judgement of others? I think the selectors would have though about it…So, if I say something it would be criticising them. I don’t want to criticise them. They (selectors) are a group of people who must have planned and thought about that,” World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev said in an event in New Delhi on Monday.

Two-time runners-up England were the first team to unveil their squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, having done so shortly before Christmas. Here’s the full squad:

New Zealand were the first of three teams to unveil their provisional squad for the Champions Trophy on the 12th January deadline set by the ICC, with the Black Caps – who had won the 2000 edition of the tournament after defeating India in the final – recalling pacers Lockie Ferguson and Ben Sears.

After New Zealand, Bangladesh announced their squad for the Champions Trophy, the event in which they had reached the semi-finals in 2017. The Tigers left out Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das from the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led squad, the former’s 18-year international career likely coming to an end as a result of the exclusion.

Hashmatullah Shahidi has been retained as captain of Afghanistan’s provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, with the top-order batting having nearly led the Afghans to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup in India after victories over England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Two-time champions Australia had announced their 15-man squad on Monday, with skipper Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood included in the squad despite carrying fitness concerns and being rested for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Top-order batter Jake Fraser-McGurk was among the notable absentees from the squad.

Additionally, the upcoming Champions Trophy will be the first ICC event since 2014 to not feature wicketkeeper-opener Quinton de Kock.

South Africa, winners of the inaugural edition of the ICC Champions Trophy in 1998 (knock as the ICC KnockOut Tournament back then), are the latest team to have unveiled their provisional squad for the upcoming mega event. Anrich Nortje, who had missed the Proteas’ 2023 ODI World Cup campaign in which they had reached the semi-finals, returns from injury as does pace colleague Lungi Ngidi, while Gerald Coetzee misses out.

Bumrah wasn’t included in India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against England and will also be rested for the one-dayers against the same team. The senior pacer will even miss the group stage of the Champions Trophy as he is not expected to regain fitness until the first week of March.

After a stellar performance in the Test series in Australia, in which he was the leading wicket-taker with 32 scalps, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be sidelined for sometime and check into the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for a back injury that he had suffered in the fifth Test in Sydney.

The ICC was even reportedly considering moving the tournament to the United Arab Emirates, where India will be playing their matches in Dubai. The PCB, however, played down concern over its venues, stating they would be ready in time for the handover to the world governing body on 12 February and that the tournament will go ahead as planned. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is facing flak for the state of the three venues that are scheduled to host matches in the ICC Champions Trophy. With a little over a month left for the tournament to get underway, construction work at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Karachi’s National Stadium and the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi is yet to be completed.

The legendary Kapil Dev did not want to comment on the possible retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from international cricket, saying that it was up to them to take a call. Rohit and Kohli have come under criticism following their underwhelming batting displays during the Test series in Australia. “They are very big players. Let’s hope when they think it’s the right time to play, when they think it’s not, they will call it off,” Kapil said while speaking at an event organised by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).

Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has given his prediction on the India vs Pakistan Champions Trophy match. He believes that Pakistan will hold the upper hand. “The way Pakistan has played recently—defeating Australia in Australia and then beating South Africa—shows their strength, especially in overseas conditions. Considering their recent performances, I think Pakistan will have the upper hand against India,” said Amir. ( READ

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has denied rumours of rift between India head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma. “It’s completely wrong statement, there is no rift between chairman of selection and coach, there is no rift between captain and coach. This is all rubbish which is being spread in a section of media,” Shukla told news agency PTI, after relations between the two seemed to have been tense. ( READ

Despite their recent slump in form, former India cricketer Yograj Singh has backed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to come good in India’s upcoming assignments. He said that the two are crucial to developing the younger generation of players. “I was saying that don’t remove Rohit from captaincy and nor drop Virat. We need these two legends to groom the youngsters. The team needs these two players for 3-4 years more including (Jasprit) Bumrah. We have to create a solid bench strength,” Yograj told news agency IANS.

“We had a great season together. It was just the last bit [the final] that we could not execute the way we wanted to. It will be a proud moment for me if I were to be picked in the Champions Trophy side to represent the country,” Iyer was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

India batter Shreyas Iyer is ready to bat anywhere if he is picked in the squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. The BCCI is likely to announce India squad for the Champions Trophy on 18 or 19 January. “Absolutely. I’m flexible and ready to bat anywhere in the batting order. KL and I, we played that important role in the middle during the World Cup.

After a disastrous Test tour of Australia, the BCCI has reportedly introduced several restrictions for players. According to a report in Danik Jagran, the BCCI is set to bring back an old rule that it had relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, in which wives, girlfriends and other family members will not be allowed to travel with players for more than two weeks in an overseas tour lasting 45 days or more. Shubman Gill, who endured a forgettable outing in the Test series against Australia, could play Punjab’s next Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka, according to multiple reports. Gill scored just 93 runs from five innings in the Test series against Australia. ( READ

The BCCI will in all likelihood announce the India squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy on 18 or 19 January. According to news agency PTI, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is unlikely to make the India squad for the eight-team tournament. The report adds that KL Rahul will play as a specialist batter, whereas Rishabh Pant will be India’s first-choice wicketkeeper.

Former India cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan have made their picks for the India squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Their combined squad has the likes of regulars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, whereas young Nitish Kumar Reddy also features.

India and Pakistan are the only two teams yet to announce their squads for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. You can check out the updated squads of all the teams by clicking the link here.

With the Australia vs India Test series done, the focus now shifts to limited-overs, more particularly the 2025 Champions Trophy. India’s squad for the Champions Trophy is likely to be announced on 18 or 19 January, but who will make the cut? And which players could miss out? Click here to read.

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar believes that the BCCI should back Shreyas Iyer and suggested that he bat at No 4 in the Champions Trophy, if he is selected. He also said that KL rahul should bat at No 5 followed by Rishabh Pant at No 6. “No. 4 for me will be Shreyas Iyer. No. 5 will be KL Rahul and No. 6 will be Rishabh Pant. Sanju Samson, with the hundreds he has scored, has to be in the squad because he has scored hundreds for India. How can you ignore somebody who is scoring hundreds for his country?,” Gavaskar said.

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has snubbed Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja from his India squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. “I think one among Sanju Samson or Rishabh Pant should be picked. I feel Sanju should be preferred because he had played in South Africa. Rishabh played well in Australia, but it was a long tour, so if he is rested, it’s not a big thing,” he said on his YouTube channel.

India batter Virat Kohli endured a disappointing outing in Australia during the Test series, but he was still synonymous for his animated behaviour on the field. This even included that of shoulder-bumping teenager Sam Konstas. Australia legend Ian Chappell believes Kohli must stop this “senseless” behaviour. “His (Kohli’s) consistency needs to improve in addition to dispensing valuable advice to younger players. He also has to stop his senseless antics like shouldering Sam Konstas in the MCG Test. If Kohli does decide to retire from Test cricket, the loss of both him and Rohit would leave a huge gap in the line-up for a tough tour,” Chappell said on ESPNCricinfo.

Former England cricketer David Lloyd has said that Virat Kohli’s time in international cricket is up. “Virat Kohli knows he is past his best and that will hurt. When India come to England, you know where he’s going to be. Just outside off stump, and the business area will be the slips. At 36 years of age, up in the mind, he knows what he should be doing. Your reflexes gently go. Ponting said he carried on a bit longer than he usually would have. The selectors should know. He is one of the greatest players we have seen but is past his best,” he said on talkSport Cricket. The coach Gautam Gambhir will have an enormous say, a big say, because he has been in that dressing room. He has lost time. His time is over,” he added.

Rohit Sharma arrived at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday and trained with members of the Mumbai Ranji squad, including skipper Ajinkya Rahane. Rohit is looking to rediscover his form after a disastrous tour of Australia.

India squads for England ODI series and Champions Trophy Highlights: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce squads for the ODI series against England as well as the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy either on 18 or 19 January. The International Cricket Council (ICC) had set 12 January as the deadline for all teams to announce their squad for the Champions Trophy. However, India and Pakistan are yet to announce their squads.

Why hasn’t the BCCI announced the India squad for the Champions Trophy?

The fitness of Jasprit Bumrah could be one of the reasons why the BCCI hasn’t announced the India squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Bumrah had sustained a back spasm on Day two of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney, and the BCCI is carefully monitoring the pacer. There are also concerns over the form of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have for a long time been the backbone of the Indian team. The two of them endured underwhelming series in Australia and the BCCI will want them to fire on all cylinders in the Champions Trophy.

Which teams are in India’s Champions Trophy group?

India are in Group A along with Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand. India open their campaign against Bangladesh on 20 February, before facing Pakistan three days later. They will round off their group stage against New Zealand on 2 March. India will pay all of their matches in Dubai.
