Celtic Tipped to Make Move for Liverpool Left-Back

Celtic were not able to adequately strengthen in a number of positions this summer. One of them might be the left-back position.

Last season, they had Marcelo Saracchi at the club. The Uruguayan international stepped up whenever called upon and some even felt he deserved more opportunities as a starter.

Yet, for some reason, Celtic did not sign Saracchi on a permanent basis this summer, even though he was available for a bargain transfer fee.

Instead, they ended up signing Landon Emenalo on loan from Chelsea. Now, he is a very highly rated talent without a doubt. That being said, he is still an 18-year-old who has not played a single game of senior football yet.

And in the long run, Celtic have no chance of keeping him beyond this season. On the other hand, it looks like the club already have their eyes set on a Liverpool player they might be able to sign very soon.

Celtic keen on Liverpool left-back

The player in question is Luke Chambers. The 22-year-old has come through the youth ranks at Liverpool but has largely spent his time on loan at clubs like Wigan, Charlton and Kilmarnock, which is where he has gotten chances to play.

He has stayed put at Liverpool for the time being as a cover option but that is not expected to be his long term role.

According to a report from Glasgow World, Alan Nixon wrote on his Patreon: "Liverpool will let left back Luke Chambers go on loan in January - with Celtic among his admirers. Chambers was kept at the Kop for cover in the summer but will be helped to find a home in the New Year. The Scottish giants are keen on Chambers as a long term project. He is out or contract at the end of the season."

It remains to be seen if Celtic do end up making a move for Chambers in the winter transfer window or not.

To be very honest, if Emenalo is able to perform, it is hard to imagine that the Hoops would go for another left-back. That would not go down well with Chelsea.

That being said, it is believed that Celtic did make a late move for Greg Taylor this summer. This suggests they want another option in that position.

In the long run, though, it would make sense to try and sign someone like Chambers, ideally on a permanent basis.

Chambers has a decent bit of senior experience under his belt. He is no stranger to Scottish football either, having spent time on loan at Kilmarnock already.

Of course, you would not expect even Chambers to come in and challenge for the starting spot immediately. For the time being, and potentially for the foreseeable future, Kieran Tierney has that spot.

The Scottish international has a long injury history though. And we are already seeing him spend time on the sidelines at the start of this season.

As a result, Celtic always need to be prepared for a scenario in which they need to cope without Tierney for long spells. Someone like Chambers could do that.
