Debate erupts after Aussie cricket star with average of 50 overlooked in latest Test squad

Aussie cricket fans have called out the glaring absence of Matt Renshaw in the Aussie Test squad after the batter averaged just shy of 50 in the latest edition of the Sheffield Shield. The Aussie squad was announced for the Bangladesh Test series on Tuesday for two Tests in Darwin and Cairns on August 13 and 22.

Australia are reportedly going to stick with Jake Weatherald and Travis Head as openers with Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green to round out the middle order with Steve Smith. Both Labuschagne and Green struggled during the Ashes for consistent runs and could be given the Bangladesh series to find form before Australia take on South Africa in a tough tour.

But the decision to leave out Renshaw has left plenty of Aussie cricket fans perplexed. Renshaw played 10 Sheffield Shield games for Queensland in the 2025/26 competition and scored 499 runs at an average of 49.90.

This includes three centuries. Renshaw has made his way back into the white-ball format for Australia, but has been left on the periphery of the Test squad even though his form has caught the attention of fans.

Many felt this was a great opportunity for selectors to include Renshaw in the squad to get a run and put pressure on the incumbents. Instead, selectors have opted to go with the strongest possible side in a nod to the XI that will be taking on South Africa. Australia have to also continue to accumulate World Test Championship points in the series against Bangladesh.

Michael Neser left out of Test squad

One of the other big omissions was allrounder Michael Neser after his sensational form with the red-ball for Australia. Neser's Ashes form saw him take 15 wickets in three matches against England with Australia winning the series 4-1. He was Australia's third-leading wicket-taker.

The Queenslander stepped up brilliantly in the absence of captain Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood who played a combined one Test match across the summer. But Neser has missed out on the 13-payer squad announced on Tuesday with Cummins, Hazlewood andn Lyon all returning in a full strength side.

It also appears likely that Boland will make way from the playing XI if Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc and Lyon form the bowling attack. Beau Webster has held his spot in tandem with fellow all-rounder Green.
