Frank Lampard commits future to Coventry City with huge statement of intent

Frank Lampard has committed himself to Coventry City by signing a new contract until 2029 as he prepares to lead the club in its first season back in the Premier League.

His signature is a huge statement of intent from the Sky Blues and will be celebrated by the fans who hold the head coach in extremely high regard after securing promotion in style, and a return to top flight football for the first time in 25 years.

The 48-year-old has been linked with interest in a couple of managerial vacancies in recent months, with Crystal Palace and Fulham both reported to have had him on their shortlist.

But as well as putting an end to such speculation, Lampard's commitment suggests that he will be getting the backing from owner Doug King to strengthen his squad in order to be competitive next season. It's unlikely that the former Chelsea and Everton boss would have agreed to a new deal if he hadn't been given assurances that he'll get the tools to do a decent job in the top flight.

Lampard has taken charge of 82 matches in total, winning 45 of them, as he edges closer towards 100 matches at the helm. The former Chelsea midfielder has built an incredible connection with supporters, staff and the city of Coventry over the course of his tenure.

Lampard is excited for the next chapter with the Sky Blues and preparing the team for the upcoming Premier League campaign. After putting pen-to-paper on his new deal, Lampard said: “I’m delighted to have signed a new contract, it’s a real honour to represent this club.

“After the incredible work of everybody to get promoted and win the Championship, it was important to enjoy the moment, and we certainly did as a city.

“Our job then as staff, and for the players of course, is to firstly recharge but also focus on what we want to do and what we need to for next season. There’s a lot of work to do on and off the pitch as a football club, so those things have been on going.

“I’m looking forward to getting back with the players, to see them all and get ready for the new season.

“I’d like to thank everyone at the football club. The fans first and foremost for how they’ve supported the team, myself and my staff in allowing us to get to where we’ve got to. The spirit and togetherness we created last year was something great to be part of and now we want to continue it.

“Thank you to Doug King as well for giving me the opportunity to come to this football club and for his support of us. We work together and we know there’s a lot to do but we’re going to give it everything.”

Owner and Executive Chairman Doug King added: “I am absolutely delighted that Frank and his team have “signed the contract,” so to speak.

“Since arriving in November 2024, our club has been on a huge upward trajectory under his leadership and it is absolutely fitting after Championship glory last season, that he leads us into our first Premier League season for a generation.”
