Jamie Carragher pokes fun at Ange Postecoglou with eight-word Tottenham verdict

Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham were riding high after hammering Manchester United last weekend but have been bought back down to earth with a poor loss at Brighton

Jamie Carragher reminded Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham that "seven days is a long time in football" after they were given a reality check at Brighton.

A week before their trip to the south coast the north Londoners had another tough away day at Manchester United - one they made light work of. Plaudits flew in after they dismantled Erik ten Hag's troubled side to win 3-0 with a performance that perhaps deserved more goals.

Seven days on though and Tottenham showed all that was wrong with them. They breezed into a 2-0 lead at Tottenham with the prolific Brennan Johnson scoring for a sixth straight game. Their half-time lead though quickly evaporated.

Brighton pulled one back thanks to Yankuba Minteh and that began a run of three goals in less than twenty minutes as they turned the game on its head. Danny Welbeck eventually heading home unmarked from six yards to win the contest for the Seagulls.

Carragher put out his statement on Twitter - which was in response to his column last week where he said: "Ange’s Tottenham are a great watch, big they are also great to play against! If that doesn’t change, the manager eventually will."

Tottenham's defeat leaves them ninth having won three and lost three of their Premier League games thus far. Postecoglou himself was fuming with his side for losing a game they had total control of as he labelled the result as "probably the worst defeat since I've been here".

He said: "It was disappointing and I’m absolutely gutted with that. It's an unacceptable second half - we were nowhere near where we should be. Maybe we got carried away with how we were going. We kind of accepted our fate and it's hard to understand as we've not done that while I've been here. We usually fight for everything, and when you don’t you pay a price."

The Australian also added: "Maybe things were travelling on too smoothly. Football and life will trip you up if you get too far ahead of yourself and that’s what it looked like in the second half.

"It’s a terrible loss for us, as bad as it gets, and there’s only one way to fix it and that’s my responsibility. We lost all our duels, we weren’t competitive and if you're not competitive, irrespective of what you do tactically, it is not going to work."

Tottenham will now have a break whilst international football takes over with a London derby their next assignment when they return as the host West Ham.
