Rivers United Stumble At Ikorodu City In Rescheduled NPFL Match

Table topping Rivers United fell to a 0-1 defeat at IKorodu City in the rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) week 30 match played yesterday at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Arena Lagos.

Although the first half was stalemated, defender Folarin Temitope broke the deadlock seven minutes into the second half to hand Ikorodu City the maximum points.

It was Ikorodu City’s third victory in six matches.

On February 8, Ikorodu City edged Niger Tornadoes 2-0 at home, recorded a historic 1-0 victory at former African champions Enyimba in week 27, before drawing 1-1 at home with Bayelsa United the following week.

Ikorodu City, however, suffered back-to-back defeats on the road. Bendel Insurance crushed them 4-0 before the slim 0-1 loss at Nasarawa United in week 29.

The losses no doubt dented Ikorodu City’s title ambition as they dropped down the table.

But yesterday’s victory over Rivers United proved pivotal to their aspirations as they are now placed third on the table with 48 points.

On the other hand, the defeat stopped Rivers United from opening the gap on second placed Enugu Rangers who are now trailing the “Pride of Rivers” with only one point.

However, Rivers United still have one more outstanding match in Minna against Niger Tornadoes on Thursday, March 19, so they would open a four-point gap on top of the table, if they emerge victorious.
